Fiddler Frankie launches the Oughterard show
BY JULIE TIERNEY The Oughterard Show was launched by world renowned De-Dannan fiddle player Frankie Gavin on Thursday night in the Lake Hotel, Oughterard. Preparations for the two day show are at an advanced stage for August 27 and 28, when Connemara ponies and their riders from all four provinces are expected to compete at Corribdale grounds. Saturday's main event will be the Connemara Championships featuring finalists from all over Ireland competing in working hunter and Connemara ridden both under and over 16 yrs. Competitions will also be held in dressage and side saddle. Sunday's competitions are in domestic arts, farm produce, cattle, sheep, ponies, horses, dogs and cats/pets. The domestic arts section takes place in the Oughterard Community Centre and is definitely worth a visit, and it will include an extensive exhibition of bonsai trees. At approximately 3.30pm on Sunday The Powers Quarry All-Ireland Performance registered Connemara Pony Championship will get under way as well as the FBD Connacht Region Draught Foal final, and the Osmonds Ecofleece scotch black face ewe lamb all Ireland Championship final. A wide variety of trade stands and family entertainment will also make the event a great day out for all. At Corribdale grounds there will be a display of flying hawks as well as children's entertainment, a bonny baby competition, and a vintage exhibition.
