Protecting your health
As the days go by and winter looms, there are more and more reports of swine flu cases in Ireland. People are concerned about what they can do to help protect themselves and their families. While proper hygiene is probably the best preventative measure, it is also important now to support and strengthen your immune system. Keeping hydrated is important for immune health, so you can help yourself by drinking plenty of uncaffeinated and unsweetened fluids such as spring water and herbal teas. You should also try to increase your consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables in place of sugary snacks and convenience foods which often contain harmful additives and too much salt. Stress is also a factor in immune health, as a stressed body is a tired body, and a tired body doesn't have the energy to fight off infection. So where possible, try to set some time aside every day to rest and relax, and try to ensure you get sufficient, quality sleep. While vitamins and herbal remedies cannot cure a cold or flu, they can help to bring relief from symptoms, stimulate the immune system and speed up recovery time. Vitamin C: Vitamin C is well known for its use as an immune support. It is believed to boost white blood cell function, antibody production and response. There is also overwhelming evidence to suggest that vitamin C inhibits the spreading of viruses. Elderberry: Studies have shown that taking elderberry extract orally, either in capsule or liquid form, may help to reduce the duration of symptoms. The properties of elderberry seem to primarily stem from an ability to inhibit a virus from replicating itself; therefore, the elderberry extract may stop the virus from spreading any further. Zinc: Although a deficiency in any essential nutrient can compromise immunity, zinc is considered by many authorities to be the most important in this respect. It is believed to be involved in practically every aspect of immunity. those who are currently suffering with flu symptoms, those who have poor digestion, and elderly people. For more information on these immune boosting products, drop in to your local Evergreen Healthfoods store. Stores are located in Moycullen, Barna, Westside, Galway Shopping Centre, and Mainguard Street.
