Housing strategy for the homeless T
H E GALWAY City C o u n c i l has passed a draft action plan to deal with homelessness in Galway. Among its recommendations are further b u i l d i n g p r o g r a m m e s a s well a s providing sites a n d accommodation to v o l u n t a r y agencies for homeless people. At a recent meeting of the Galway City Council, the Draft Homeless Action Plan 2002 - 2004 was discussed and passed by councillors. The plan has nine aims to deal with the problem of homelessness in the city. One of these aims relates to the building and provision of houses in the city to meet the needs of the homeless and those who can be homeless for long periods of time. The objective i s to ensure that homeless people have access to long term accommodation appropriate to their needs, with an emphasis on living as independently as possible and to ensure they have access to a range of appropriate emergency and transitional accommodation and day care services. The council feels that the lack of secure independent housing for families and single people means some people are becoming homeless for longer periods than would otherwise be the case. Similarly the inadequate supply of supported/special needs housing is contributing to people experiencing homelessness and being accommodated in housing and accommodation which is not suitable for their needs. The council has identified a number of actions to solve these problems. The
