CANDIDATES SPEAK OUT
A LOOK AT THE INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES
Cllr. Pat McNamara is a businessman. He currently represents Fine Gael in the South Ward. He was originally elected as an In dependent 17 years ago but joined Fine Gael. Cllr. McNamara is originally from ' Claddagh and has many friends and family members living in the Mervue area. Brendan Smith owns Monroes Pub in Dominck St. and is a partner in a com puter business in Spiddal. He lives in Sandyvale and is former PRO of the Tir Oilean Residents Associa tion. He is a graduate of UCG where he served as Student Union President. He has been involved in many campaigns to improve the Tir Oilean area of the city. Tom Browne is a former Councillor who was defeated in 1985. He believes that with Aid. Jim my Brick not seeking re election in the West Ward he has a strong chance of Eileen M a n n i n g ot Dalysfort Road, Salthill is a member of the Local Residents Association and a member of Neighbourhood Watch. She is originally from Kiltormer and is one of ten children. She trained as a nurse at St. Bridgid's Hospital, Ballinasloe and is now married with six children. She was the first woman in Ireland to drive a regular CIE Passenger Bus. Mrs. Manning says she knows from experience the difficulty of raising a fami ly on a limited income. She ointends to fight for justice for the family, success. Paddy Lally is a Steward in U.C.G. He is from Shantalla and is well known in local rowing and soccer circles. He attempted to secure a Fianna Fail nomination for the West Ward, and when he failed, decided to run as an Independent. Aidan McCabe, from Knocknacarra Heights, was the first to go forward in the West Ward as a Communi ty Candidate. Mr. McCabe who is involved in insurance has a degree in politics from U.C.G David Joyce is 27 years of age and a salesman by profession. He lives in Glenina Heights. Mr. Joyce is very well known for his teaching of the Martial Arts disclipines to hundreds of young people in Galway. Because RSF is not a registered party in Galway his name will be listed as In dependent on the Ballot Paper.

MAINTAINING T H E CORRIB
Workers Party Coun cillor Liz Hackett has call ed on Galway Corporation to take over responsibility for the maintenance of the river Corrib from the Corrib Navigation Trust. At a Galway Rowing Club Reception to announce details of this year's Galway Regatta, Cllr. Hackett said it would be a shame if the event were allowed to fade away through lack of proper maintenance and upkeep of the river. She congratulated the Regatta Committee on their hard work organising the event, and wished them every success on the 29th of June.

The three Republican Sinn Fein candidates in the forthcoming local elections in Galway have issued a joint statment informing voters in the city and coun ty that their party affilia tion will not appear on the ballot papers. They describe Republicans Sinn Fein as a 32 county political party which is not registered in Stormont, Westminister, or in Leinster House as re quired under regulations for local electiorns. The candidates, Cllr. Frank Glynn of the Tuam Electoral Area, Mr. Tom Curran of the Galway Rural Area and Mr. Dave Joyce of the North East Ward in the city stated that this restirction, "which was specifical ly designed to hamper Republican candidates" would not deflect them from carrying out an effective electoral campaign.

Progressive Democrat candidate in the West Ward, Liam Madden, has hit out at the "'intolerable living conditions" being endured by young families in the Rahoon Flats. He said problems include leaking roofs, damp, con densation, and the absence of adequate playing facilities. Some couples currently buying out their homes from the Corporation are being blocked in their at tempt to make their ownership a joint respon sibility, says Michael Don nelly, Workers' Party can didate in the West Ward. Mr. Donnelly claims that people in the area who at tempted to get a joint owner ship clause inserted in their contract with the Corpora tion, were told by legal ad visers they needed the Cor poration's consent. "Yet when formally ask ed for their consent, the Corporation failed to make any response," states Mr Donnelly. "This is a very serious issue, and means that the spouse whose name is on the agreement dies, the remaining partner does not necessarily have full rights to the property." He wants to Corporation to act immediately on the joint ownerishp issue. "If there are problems about giving their consent to the joint ownership clause, they should immediately state precisely what they are. If not, then why the silence?"

Labour Seeking County Seat
The Labour Party is to contest the Galway Coun ty Council elections on June 27th after a lapse of 12 years. Its candidate, John Cunningham is from the Claddagh, but has strong connections with the Annaghdown - Cornadulla area. John, who is a Physics lecturer has a long track record on environmental issues, having campaigned for a secondary sewage treatment for Galway. He is concerned about the poor quality of water supp ly in both Cois Fharraige and east Galway, and the in adequacy of many sewage treatment facilities. He also argues that "-the Fianna Fail/Progressive Democrat government is dismantling the little in frastructure left in rural Ireland. "This is evident from the underfunding of roads, the plan to axe 1,500 post of fices and the proposal to in troduce mail boxes."

Jim Mullarkey, on the Labour ticket with Michael D. Higgins in the West Ward, this week praised the work of the areas local community organisation, Le Cheile. " I look forward to the day when their Trojan efforts towards the creation of an Enterprise Centre on Cor poration land behind the West Ward Shopping Cen tre bears fruit." At present the I.D.A. are carrying out a feasability study for the site. "Le Cheile are an exam ple of what can be done by people at local lev el to get things moving.
