SAFE AS HOUSES
Security -- the Best Policy !
Remember the good old days when you could leave your key in the door if you went away for the day, and you could rest assured that the chances of somebody breaking in were as rare as a sighting of Hally's Comet. But sadly those days are gone and every time you leave your building, its almost as big a risk as leaving Fort Knox!
Security is vitally impor tant in today's world. Sergeant Pat Geurin of the Crime Prevention Unit, Mill St Garda Station em phasises its importance in homes and business'. "Security is something which cannot be taken for granted. Everybody should review their securi ty systems regularly with a view to expanding and improving them, as they can easily go out of order." "For private houses, especially those with ac cess to open spaces it's very important to pay at tention to windows. No matter what type of win dows you have you'll find a lock to suit it, and win dow locks are to be recom mended." Front doors, he feels, should have five lever security locks on the inside of the door, and rear doors should have two bolts. "Do not e v e r " , he stresses "leave a key in the lock on the inside of the door when going out because a hole can be bored in glass or wood.

giving burglars access to the key." Ideally he believes, people should take their keys with them when going out. "Common sense is also important in keeping homes safe, for instance if you are going away on holidays don't draw atten tion to the fact that the house is empty, by allow ing milk cartons or newspapers to gather." He also warns against leaving ladders lying round, lock them with a padlock to a wall. Garden sheds should also be lock ed, and if you have a two storey house, locks on win dows adjacent to drain pipes are advisable. "If a stranger comes to your house, satisfy yourself as to the identity of the person," says Sergeant Geurin. "That is very important, and any reputable representative of any company or body will have up to date iden tification."

secret you think it is, it's amazing how these things get known by the wrong people." Sergeant Geurin is available for consultation on both home and business security in his role as Crime Prevention Officer, and will be only too glad to assist people. duplicate key can be pro duced before the owner of the system produces his or her individual keyholder card which comes with the lock. Security Companies have also become very widespread in recent years, and in Galway there is an excellent ranee of such services available. Nightguard Security was established in 1985 by Stephen Duffy and Comdt Liam Gavin. Between them, they have over 4 0 years in the business. Nightguard is a small, highly specialised com pany, which emphasises the latest high technology equipment. It is on the recommended list of the Gardai, Fire Brigade, and all the insurance com panies. It also offers ex cellent after sales service. Connaught Security is a group which is well known Coatd. p. 19.

When it conies to securi ty in business, similar common sense rules app ly "The security required will depend on the vulnerabililty of your premises. Some goods are more attractive to crimminals than others, and all that has to be taken into consideration." "Ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked, and where ap propriate have strong doors and barred windows. The use of lighting outside and inside is also a great deterrent, " he says. Cm of the things he feels most strongly about is leaving money about your home or business premises. "This should be avoided, because no mat ter how well hidden a

Improved Services
In the last few years as people have become more security conscious, the quality of security services has improved greatly. Locks are extremely im portant in any security system, and the New MULT-LOCK high securi ty cylinders and padlocks offer the highest security available. These are available from Colleran's Locksmiths, 9 Small Crane. The cylinders have proved pick resisant, the locks have resisted drills, saws and hammers and each key can only be duplicated by the MUL-TLOCK patented machine. Another feature is that no
