Greet! in M from the two Ffntams s
T h e present M a y o r o f G a l w a y ' s father, the late A i d . Fintan C o o g a n , T . D . , con tributed to the First Edition o f the Galway Advertiser on A p r i l 16th, 1970. This week w e reprint his message which w a s quite a challenging one at the time. W e also invited the present M a y o r to com plement his late father's message. Dear Sir, It gives me great pleasure as Mayor of Galway to make this contribution to the first issue of the Galway Advertiser. The publication of this free newspaper at this time is indicative of the phen omenal growth of our city, and the more sophis ticated facilities which such growth demands. I congratulate O'Gorman Limited in their fore sight in this publication, and I trust their venture will be a success. In providing the services of this newspaper, a most practical contribution has been made in reaching out to all our citizens. As all Galwegians have recognised to their advantage, Galway has assumed recognition as the commercial capital of Connaught. The industrial drive in the city, together with the development of the natural tourist potential of the city and its hinterland have initiated dynamic forces of growth. The activities of our local auth orities in providing infrastructural services have been paramount. But we are only beginning. A growing recognition of the need for improved community facilities in the city, the preserva tion of our amenities, and the cultivation of a healthy social outlook among our citizens are some of our problems for the seventies. It is in this context that the media of communication can play a noble part. Our city is held in high regard because of the quality of its people. Their history and devotion to the simple things of life are part of their make up. In our efforts to extend industrialisation, cultivate tourism, and promote all spheres of education in our city, we must at all times be wary not to destroy the friendly aspect of our people as the price of those improvements. Im sure that your newspaper will cultivate to to the great improvement for better in our com munity. Its birth is the product of our forwardlooking society, its success will be a measure of our confidence in it. Yours sincerely, ALD. FINTAN COOGAN Mayor of Galway.
Cllr. Fintan Coogan, the present Mayor o f Galway, with his wife, Carol.. Fintan Coogan T . D . was Mayor o f Galway when the Advertiser was born.

As Mayor of Galway it gives me great personal pleasure to be asked to comment on the Galway Advertiser's contribution to Galway City. Over the nineteen years of its existence the Advertiser has found its niche in Galway City in the hearts of the people, through its educational comments, news items, but particularly for the strength of its articles and photographs of Old Galway.
Much has changed in G a l w a y Citv since the first edition o f the Advertiser in April 1970. T h e population of the City has m o r e than doubled to its present amount of 44,000. This high increase, one of the fastest in Europe, has placed heavy demands on the Local Authority to provide services, infrastructure, housing and forward planning. In the area of infrastructure many new roads have been built and others expanded to m e e t our growing traffic demands. Especially worthy of note are its new road and roundabouts leading to Quincentenary B r i d g e opened in D e c e m b e r 1987, our first bridge across the Corrib in fifty years. Our housing stock up to recently was adequate to m e e t our growing population, hopefully further finance will b e c o m e available in the next financial y e a r to match that demand. In 1984 w e celebrated our 500th anniversary leading the w a y for Cork and Dublin to follow. During our celebrations the Government recognised the value of Galway City as the regional capital of Connaught and honoured the City by granting it the highest local authority status, that of Borough Statute. A s a result G a l w a y City with co-operation of G a l w a y County Council extended its authority from an area of 5,000 statute acres to 12,000 statute acres. This allows the City to plan well into the future. The Single European Market offers a challenge that w e will be better r e a d y to m e e t now that G a l w a y ' s airport has extended its runway and is in the process of developing its terminal allowing easier access to European markets. T h e concessions g r a n t e d by the I n n e r City Designation have ensured that many derelict sites in the heart of the City have been replaced by well planned sensitive residential and c o m m e r c i a l properties. Perhaps the major development will be the building of our much demanded and long awaited municipal theatre and the extension of the museum. W h i l e much has been done to enhance the quality of life in our unique City, much m o r e d e m a n d s will be placed on it to ensure that the character of the City, its people and its environment, will be protected. I feel sure that the Galway Advertiser in its new p r e m i s e s will be with us for m a n y more years, rendering the s a m e high quality m a t e r i a l keeping a watchful eye on the City's direction.
