DEADLY SEAL VIRUS HITS WEST
It is almost certain that the c o m m o n seal washed ashore on G a l way B a y this week died of the deadly seal virus, canine distemper, which has already claimed thousands o f seals in the N o r t h S e a and the Baltic a n d
which is feared to be spreading around Ireland. A post mortem is being carried out all this week on the Seal at the Regional Veterinary Laboratory in Athlone and while all tests have yet to be completed, spokesman for the centre, P. J. Dwyer, says initial indications are the Seal
died of the new virus. "So far the post mortem has shown up evident features which would go in line with canine distemper. We've found no other evidence of any other possible cause of death like
clubbing or anything like that", he says. The grim discovery of the dead Seal was made by a local farmer on M o n d a y last while walking along the shore at Curraghgreen near Oranmore.
