The Special Olympics were established by the Joseph P. Kennedy Jnr. Foundation in 1968. The Special Olympics are the world's largest programme of sposts training and athletic competition for children and adults with a mental handicap. More than one million athletes compete year round in Olympic-type sports activities in Ireland and some 60 foreign coun tries. Programmes are run

by an international network of over 500.000 volunteers who support every aspect of the Special Olympics cause from fund-raising to coach ing athletes and officiating at Special Olympic Games. Olympics programme out side the U.S.A. The Connuught Special Olympics will take place on Thursday next, June 18th and 600 people with a mental handicap will be competing. The staff of the Brothers of Charity services, Clarinbridge, is hosting this year's events in Galway city. The games provide a means of social intercourse which is very important in the life of an individual with a handi-

cap. The Connaught area also incorporates Donegal, Longford and Westmeath. The Connaught Games have been in operation since 1980. This year 41 centres throughout Connaught are represented with a total of 600 athletes and 200 coaches coming together for this major day in the calendar of a person with a mental handicap. Centre, Gort, the Con naught Special Olympic Committee have asked for a major effort to be put into the Games this year. Much of the work has to be contributed to the organis ing skill of Mr. Tom Cordon, secretary and the rest of the organising committee. The programme of the clay's events is: 9.15--Registration in Fairgreen Car Park. 9.45--Parade around Eyre Square and on to the Green led by the Renmore Pipe Band, followed by lighting of Olympic flame. Official opening with Frank Fahey T.D. (Minister for Sport) and Alderman John Mulholland, Mayor of Galway. Reading of Olympic oath. 10JO--Disperse to the venues for events. 11.60--Commencement of events: Swimming will be al Leisureland. Track and field at U.C.G. Track, Dangan. Special events--Leisureland Hall and gymnastics at the Renmore Community Centre. These events will run simultaneously throughout the day. The dosing cere monies will take place at 5 p.m. m Dangan wit h open air Mass. An added attraction is the fact that in the swimming and gymnastic categories, the national teams, compel ing in Galway, will compete in the World Special Olympics this July in South Bend, Indiana, U.S.A. At this stage the organis ing committee wish to extend their thanks to: The Corporation, for all their help; Leisureland, for their co-operation: to Mr. Lee and Mr. Regan of U.C.G. and all our sponsors. The Gardaf have also been of tremendous help. . The people of Galway are invited to attend the Games and to view the parade. This would really add to the occasion and make many children and adults with a mental handicap very proud on their special day. Do come along--it wiB be a very special day.
