JANE Jane and G e r r y Clarke from O r a n m o r e t r a v e l l e d to Australia last month for a holiday they said they will never forget. They had been con sidering emigration and decided to fly down under to see for themselves one of the few lands of oppor tunity left on this planet. They flew to London from Dublin to connect with a Thai Airways flight to Perth via Bankok. This flight is one

GERRY

CLARKE heading 300 miles into the outback to Gerry's uncle in Three Springs. He runs a sheep and wheat farm and they came just in time to see the shearing. The Clarkes have planned that if they do emigrate they will get into farming. During their stay heat was a problem as Australia was in the grips of a heatwave, even the Australians were experiencing difficulties. After nine days in the country they returned to Perth for a further four days.

of the longest in the world and takes 26 hours including a five hour stop-over in Bankok but Jane and Gerry likened the service and comfort to that of a five star hotel. The flights, and indeed the whole holiday, went totally without hitch or delay and they were full of praise for J o h n O'Dowd at Fahy Travel, who organised the trip for them at very short notice. They spent two days in Perth on arrival with Gerry's relations before

They found Perth, a 55 year old city, beautiful and clean, and fortun ately very easy to get a r o u n d . Visiting rela tions and their friends they were impressed by the world-famous Aust ralian lifestyle and found the people friendly and interested, everyone knew about Ireland they said. The Australians are great workers, rising at 5 a.m. when the day is cooler. Early mornings like this are not conducive to late night carousing but they greatly enjoyed

another Australian institution: the Barbeque. Every evening at around seven o'clock there was barbequed food and beer at someone's house and it was here that they met most people. They recalled meeting a number of Irish who swore that they would never return to their home country and that they would spend the rest of their lives in Australia. Before heading for Bankok the Clarkes also visited Freemantle at the tail end of the Americas Cup boat race, which they said was still crowded with million aires, and Gearaldton. Back in Bankok they were booked into the "Asia" hotel where they were overwhelmed by the standard of luxury a n d service, they said that there is nothing like it in Ireland. They enjoyed Bankok immensely for their three day stay, and although it is crowded, dirty, and totally commercial, they thought it was a crazy place and they had great fun there. They said that they would gladly return but would stay for a week next time. After their short stay in Australia the Clarkes are convinced that this is where they want ot live, and are trying to get visas at the moment. They have four young children who did not accompany them on the trip but who, of course, will come with ihem if they emigrate. If they cannot go perman ently they will certainly go for another holdiay there as soon as possible, this time for at least six weeks. They were sorry they hadn't longer this time around, nevertheless they saw a lot and enjoyed themselves to the full. Stephen ComerforJ.
