A n g l o Irish B a n k Senior L e a g u e o n Sunday
T h e Anglo Irish Bank Connacht Senior League resumes after the Christ m a s break and there a r c three m a t c h e s listed for Sunday next. First of these games is the home m a t c h for Sligo, and they take on Ballina the top t e a m , and unbeaten in the competition to-date. It will be difficult to sec the home t e a m take the points, and Ballina should chalk u p another two and go unbeaten. Ballina have missed one m a t c h , in their p a r t i c u l a r campaign, against Corint h i a n s on t h e 14th December, when they failed to travel, owing to the road conditions in Mayo. This refixture will be of major i m p o r t a n c e to the competition. The date for the Referees Annual Dinner is fixed for the 28th February. The venue this year is Corinthian R.F.C. and Robbie Gall agher is the dinner secretary, where tickets can be had at a very reasonable price.

G l y n n ' s

T h e r e will be few tears shed in the Galway Ltd camp at the end of 1986. A season that had begun so promis ingly for the club has turned r e m a r k a b l y sour of late. This was well illustrated again in the Showgrounds last Sunday when Utd, despite coming back to equalise through John C a r r , were beaten by a late goal by Sligo's Tony O'Kelly. Adding insult to injury Utd enjoyed the advantage of an extra m a n after the dis missal of Sligo s t a r M a r t i n Bayly. Points in Sligo are generally h a r d won but surely Utd will have cursed their luck after Sunday's misfortunes. Coming hard upon their 2--1 defeat at the h a n d s of Dundalk, Utd had not much to enthuse about in December '86, b a r r i n g their welcome win in Waterford. Half-way through Utd's campaign the Terryland follower finds himself making some unflattering comparisons between this season's Utd side and last season's trailblazers. In Utd's League games thus far no less than twenty-three players have done duty for the club. This reflects a side in transition forced to experiment in a pressure situation. The hasty discarding of some of the protagonists clearly reflected management's unease with the resources available. Sunday's return match with Sligo affords the Galway outfit an early opportunity of extracting revenge for last Sunday's defeat. The tie indeed signals the start of the second half of the Premier League programme. Galwegians will be gladdened at Sligo's consolidation of their Premier status but they will hardly wish to extend any more gifts on the field of play. If M a r t i n Baylcy's performance will be watched with interest then 'keeper Davis, O'Connell, Fagan and McLoughlin are other stars worthy of some scrutiny in the Sligo ranks. this time last season Neville Stcedman's a r r i v a l in the Galway Utd ranks from Shamrock R o v e r s denied the youngster his chance of a Leage C u p medal against the same opposition. John's university season in Boston had gotten off to a tremend ous start when he finished top scorer with twelve goals for his college. His side boasted a Norweg ian, a Venezuelan, three Nigerians, two Amer icans, two Englishmen and an ex Home Farm player, Tony Lawlor. He found a varied standard in the American game but is now looking forward to displaying his talents on the lush Milltown sward. It is a watermark for t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of soccer in Galway that top local players would make their m a r k for leading clubs in the country. John has always been a wonderful ambassador for soccer in the city. We wish him well in hit efforts to get his League of Ireland career back to the top and with the serious task of gaining suitable employment here in Galway.

O.L.B.C. 6 pts. Vice Pres. XV 3 pts.
Former greats of Boys Club r e t u r n e d to t h e Sportsground last Sunday to compete in the Annual President's v. Vice-Presi dent's XV. The President's side captained by club captain Joe Murphy, won the day 6 pts. to 3 pts., in a very keenly contested affair. Former International Michael Casserly, featured on the winning team, and his own individual performance helped his side immeasur ably to take the trophy. Others who played on the day were Padraic Griffin, Tom Burke, Noel Spelman, Durkan Forde and Tom Coyne. The Vice-Pres. XV was captained by Ray Hughes and the game was in the balance until the final whistle. Robbie Gallagher refereed.

Galwegian v. Ballinasloe (S.L.)
In the second match Galwegians have Ballinasloe in Glenina and should be strong enough to take the points. At this point it looks that neither of these two sides will be in the shake-up for the honours at the end of February, as both have lost games. Galwegians lost points to UCG and Ballina, while Ballinasloe are six points down.

Weekend Fixtures
SATURDAY 3rd
ATHLONE V. CLONTARF (J.F.)

Corinthians v. Westport (S.L.)
In the third Anglo Irish Bank senior league, Corinthians are at home to Westport at Corinthian Park. It's important for the home side to get the points in this match as they are two points down, since their defeat by Athlone in October. Athlone are also two points down since their defeat by Galwegians on 14th October. So the top teams in the league are Ballina unbeaten, with Corinthians and Athlone 2 points down. The three games kick-off at 2.30 p.m.

John's Triumph
T h e r e will be great i n t e r e s t in G a l w a y football circles at t h e signing of John Glynn by Shamrock Rovers. John is set to make his debut for the Hoops in tomorrow's League C u p final against Dundalk. This is a curious quirk of fate for John, as JACK Walsh MAHON, (Killanin). Aiden White
Congratulations to Aiden White the Garbally full back who has made it to the Irish Schools panel, and is sub full back. Aiden is son of Dome and Ann White from Salthill, and needless to say is a product from his father's club Corinthians. He started his rugby with the Corinthian underage section and has made steady progress. He kicked the 6 points in the schools senior cup final last year that gave Garb ally the title. Well done Aiden and good luck.

The Victoria Club Inter-Firm Competition is reaching a imax. The main competition has given plenty of great snooker. Well, that is what 67 year old Helen Gray did at her home c l u b , at T o d m e r t o n , Lancashire, last year playing off an 11 handicap. Incredibly, this is not a world record - it ties with the record held by a New Zealand golfer. --O-- I thought I had read everything unusual about golf and golfers until I read about a Hugh Harvie of O'DONNELL, Alderman John Mulholland, Mayor of Portpatrick. He wen his club championship with a nett 54 Linnane on right. A happy New Year to all my readers, playing off an 18 handicap. He had 18 putts ! ! The "SAM MAGUIRE"
