SAM MAGUIRE'S G.A.A. COLUMN :
Sunday next February 9 -- Guinness Fourball. Did you know that the 'feathery' golf ball was made up of three pieces of leather stitched together to form a shape. A small opening was left and through this hole freshly boiled chicken feathers were stuffed -- "one tall hatful". As they dried the moist feathers expanded to fill their leather jacket and the finished ball was sometimes painted white. A good ball-marker could turn out two or three such balls in a day. Ironically enough, it appears that many of the ballmakers contracted an illness, believed, at the time to come from handling the feathers. Did you know that the first 18 hole course ever built in England was Westward Ho in .Devon. The reason it was laid out as 18 was because it was designed and built by Tom Morris of St. Andrews who took the St. Andrews links for his standard. St. Andrews actually started as a 6 hole course which eventually was extended to 18. "The less said about the putter the better. Here is an instrument o f torment designed by Tantalus and forged in the devils own smithy. It can be a magic wand or a writhing snake. Cialahads quest for the Holy C trail was just a cursory glance compared with the feverish search that goes on constantly among golfers for that one putter with the golden touch. No club in the bag has been so hammered, twisted, bent and shaped into so many grotesque forms. No other shot has been played with so many contortions by the human b o d y " ( T o n y Lema).

Galway's P r i d e Returns Despite Defeat
T h e heading tells the story. This was the day Galway's football pride returned despite a 0-12 to 0-10 defeat by A l l Ireland finalists Dublin at Ballinasloe. It was a game we should have drawn. Galway led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time and should have been farther ahead, for there were far too many speculative lobs at the goalkeeper John O'Leary and never a decent shot at him. Newcomer Sean Glynn got a gift goal chance early in the game but his inexperience showed as he tamely tapped it to the goalie instead o f gaining possession and blasting to the net. Easier said than done. whirlwind fashion with 2-1 in the first 15 minutes and looked as if they would have a runaway victory. However, the home s i d e , who incidently were having their first outing together, soon showed their worth and despite several team changes d u r i n g the game to accommodate their large panel they played some excellent team football. Two fine goals from Salthill's full forward Declan Burke was just the tonic they needed to put it up to the young Dubs and from there to the finish there wasn't a kick of a ball between the sides until referee Gerry Horan called it a day. Outstanding for Salthil were the Gilmartin brothers Brian and David, Kieran Coyne, Paraic Gavin, Fergal O'Gara, John Tobin, Richard Butler, Declan Burke and Conor Meehan. T h e B a l l y b o d e n St. Enda's panel stayed in the homes of their opposite numbers overnight and then went to Ballinasloe to watch the National Football League game between Galway and Dublin. A return game was arranged in Dublin before the party returned home. We wish to thank the Ballyboden Club for the presentation made to mark the occasion of the visit and also the parents of the Salthill players for providing accommodation for the Dublin players for the week end.
Sporting G a m e
This, as well as being a good game, was a sporting one as well. Much of the bad feeling still there since 1983 will now have gone the way it should go. Galway played with great spirit. Yet it would be wrong to imagine that there are no problems left. Our full forward line was very inept. Brian Barrett was outclassed by Gerry Hargan. Stephen Joyce, after a good start and a great point, was easily beaten by Pat Canavan and Sean Glynn didn't fit in as a corner forward wandering far too much. When Ricky Flaherty came on for Joyce we got some fire up front but then his lack of fitness let him down when he shot a crucial wide when a score was on. John Coleman too was an improvement on Barrett but his coming on was too late for Galway.

Anglo Irish Badminton Tournament
A highly su c cessful badminton tournament took pla ce re cently at Galway Lawn Tennis Club sponsored by Anglo Irish Banks. This is a new tournament and is of gread credit to a hardworking committee in attra cting a new sponsor ship in these hard times. The tournament attra cted 120 entries and was run over a full week at the club. The tournament comprised of 4 grades in mixed doubles and those supporting were treated to some magnifi cent mat ches. Seamus M c H u g h
My star of the Galway team was old reliable Seamus McHugh. At the end we saw him at his very best. Padhraic Kelly too gave a capital display. 1986 should be a great year for him. Others to do well were new full-back John Fallon, a consummate footballer, Val Daly though overinclined to go into attack (let the ball do the work Val as Jack O'Shea says), Brian O'Donnell (his best game for some time), Tomas Tierney before injury, Gay McManus who fought hard all through and Peter Greaney in the first half. Martin Cooke was lucky in goal once or twice but he kept his net intact.

N.H.L. We have three home hurling games on successive Sundays starting v. Limerick in Loughrea next Sunday. And with five AU Stars to boost us we should continue our winning ways. Congrats are in order to Seamus Coen, Sylvie Linnane, Pete Finnerty, Brendan Lynskey and Joe Cooney. But we cannot take anything for granted against the N.H.L- champions. While I'm at it congrats too to Dermot Flanagan, Kevin M c S t a y , W i l l i e Joe Padden and Paul Earley. Anyhow it's great to have the games back again. An exciting year lies ahead. Until next week fagaim slan agaibh. Oh yes, we had a great time at the G.A.A. Quiz last Saturday night in Caherlistrane. Salthill won the team event. Slan aris.
W h a t of D u b l i n
Dublin will be a force again in '86. The new selection committee has given them fresh impetus and they played with a flourish. It was great to hear a Galway - Galway G a l w a y , c h a n t at a football game again. Some people keep on telling us we have a football crisis in Galway. They have all sorts of solutions. But the spirit that was evident at all stages last Sunday s h o w e d that G a l w a y football is alive.

Joe Sullivan from the Mellows Club was the surprise winner o f the Taylors Hill open competition held on Sunday last. Paul Gallagher won the 18 Gross with a four under par 50. Taylors Hill next competition Sunday 16th February. T h e Galway County Board held their first meeting of the new season last week and have arranged "free subs" competitions commencing on Sunday, March 9th in Taylors Hill. T h e c o m p e t i t i o n will continue on loth and 23rd of March in Mellows and Curragreen and each week there will be a prize of free membership for the winner despite his great footballing prowess. The last N . F . L . game is away to Donegal on March 2nd. It's a whole month away. We won't get any favours in Donegal. But if Cyril Dunne and his selectors can keep the same impetus and spirit then Donegal can be beaten away. Add in Gerry Daly to the Galway hero list. It's a pity Aodan O Se had to be demoted for he is a footballer of great heart who should came again.
