Christmas Reading Further to my Christmas reading list of last week here are a few more. Killimor Hurling Clab 1884-1984 -- Price '5. Well produced. Some great photos. Visually attractive. Murphy's Micro Quiz-M Book 3 -- Published by Canavan Books (whose Managing Director is Kevin Brophy, son of former Galway Hurling corner back Jim). Kevin usually sends me on review copies of his Quizbooks. Another one is Val Joyce's Airs and Races Quizbook -- another good Quizbook. Gaelic Sport (Winter Issue) -- as always, a winner. This is the best of the G A A periodicals and though not as regular as it used to be continues to survive well. Still very good value. That's enough of books for a time. Oughterard A . G . M . Corinthians beat holders
Corinthians Galwegians 4 pts. 3 pts. The quality of football served up last Sunday in the Anglo Irish Senior League game at the Sportsground was most disappointing, even allowing for the strong wind and ground conditions. Neither showed any sign of opening up the game, and it continued a dour forward battle for the entire game. Galwegians were first to score, when Brian O'Donnell kicked a 35 yard penalty. This was the perfect ingredient for this local derby clash, as Corinthians were the hot favourites. However, the large attendance at the Sportsground were indeed disappointed as it was scrum after scrum, in one of the worst displays from both clubs. Shortly before half time Jarlath O'Connell the Corinthian centre broke through the Galwegian defence to touch down for his club's only score of the game. We all expected a running game in the second half, as Corinthians had the strong wind advantage. It was not to be, and we saw little or any decent football right to the end of the game. I would like to have seen Brian O'Donnell play at outhalf as he was the only Galwegian to have a go in the backs. Joe Healy (capt.), Tom Richardson, Paud Finn and Joe Smith were best in the Galwegians pack while backs O'Donnell, Corley and Boyd tried hardest. Corinthians back row pair of J. Moone, D . Greaney (capt.), with P. Walsh and P. McGrath were the best in the pack. Backs T. Conneely, C. Smith, J. J. Gorman, Henry O'Toole and Fintan O'Flynn are players who tried to lift this poor game. Referee Tom Moran ( O . L . B . C : ) handled the game very well. President of the l.R.F.U. Mr. Des McKibbin is an invited guest as are the secretary and president of each of the three other referees associations. It's always a good night. Senior Cup Referees At a recent meeting of the Union Advisory Committee in Dublin, under the Chairmanship of Dr. A . D. Browne (Corinthians) a new system was inaugurated. It was agreed between the four provincial delegates that a referee from each province would exchange one game in the first round of the senior cup. Connacht referee Harry O'Connor will be in charge of one of the Ulster first round games and we will have Gordan Ward from Ulster for the Corinthian v Athlone (S.C.) on March 23 at Corinthian Park. On the ball The match ball for the recent s c h o o l s interprovincial between Connacht and Ulster was sponsored by Connolly Brothers, C l a r e g a l w a y . CaHed "Shannon" its a good quality product, and what a nice gesture from the Connollys. as from the beginning, and down the years he has held the various officerships on committee and was club president in 1979/80. No matter where you met him, or who you were with, he always stopped for the chat, and one always felt comfortable in his company as he gave 100 per cent of his attention at all times. I will always remember Dennis as a kind, gentle and generous man who loved the crack with the lads and the rugby weekends, be they at home or way, above all he was a devout family man. I would like to offer to Lena and her children our deepest sympathy as Dennis is a big loss to all his rugby friends. May he rest in peace. Centenary Dinner A special centenary dinner will be given by the Connacht Branch to honour its past Internationals, Presidents, Officers at the Westwood Restaurant on Friday, February 21 1986. This is one of the Centenary celebrations and plans are well in hand for this occasion. There are 23 Connacht International players invited to the dinner. How many can you name? Write them down and see how close you get to 23. I will publish the list in a later edition. Galwegians in play-off The Galwegian 2nd XV beat UCG last Sunday and these two points were enough to qualify them for a play off situation. They now join O.L.B.C. as the top two teams in Section 1 of the Connacht Junior League. Galwegians and OLBC play Creggs and Ballinasloe in the semi finals on 2nd February. Both Galway dubs have away games and the winners meet in the

League Final on February 16 at the Sportsground. Successful Gala Ball The Connacht Branch recently celebrated a highly successful Centenary Gala Ball in the Great Southern Hotel. Nearly all the Connacht clubs were represented and the guest speaker on the occasion was one of Connacht's most successful international players Ray McLoughlin. Galwegians v. Young Munster Visitors to Glenina this Saturday at 2.30 p.m. are Young Munster who take on the local Galwegian firsts. Weekend Fixtures Saturday 18th. Civil Service v. Sligo (SF). U.C.C. v. Hurling Board Dinner At the Hurling Board Dinner, Pete Finnerty received the U.21 Hurler of the Year Award (the Liam Shields Award). He also received his Man of the Match Framed Certificate, courtesy of RTE for his magestic display against Cork last August. The Dinner was enjoyable but it was a pity that so few players from Galway's Senior, U.21 and Minor teams saw fit to attend as guests to receive their awards. Finally the Co. Chairman David McGann when presenting the Josie Gallagher Cap to Phelim Murphy said Phelim had attended 172 meetings in 1985 in his many capacities as a G A A man. And the brave Turloughmore man is thriving on it all. Well done Phelim.

Galway G . A . A . Convention The Secretary Frank Burke's report to hand. As usual an excellent one. But this Sunday's Annual Convention in St. Patrick's N.S. Auditorium is going to be all about Elections almost, especially for the Chair where Jimmy Halliday and Frank Fahy are in contention. There is nothing like an election to draw the delegates. Details next week of the latter and the other elections. Apologies In our Obituary list last week we included the death of Marie Sweeney wife of the former Galway F. Board Chairman, Joe Sweeney. Apologies for the misprint. Marie was a great G A A fan like her husband and I remember the behind the scenes work of her genial personality on many fine G A A occasions in Ballygar, not least a lovely Menu Card she personally prepared in 1956 (hand done and so much more personal than the mass produced job). Ar dheis De go raibh si.

Dennis Dennehy R.I.P. When we heard the very sad news of Dennis Dennehy's death, we were all shocked. Dennis was one of nature's gentlemen. A Tipperary man who came to live in Tuam some years ago, married Lena Kilgarriff and was one of Tuam's most respected citizens. Dennis was one of the members in Tuam R.F.C. who reformed the club in 1970/71 season. His contribution to the Tuam club can never be measured

No All Stars (F) Once upon a time we used to have All Stars in football. Now we don't even get one nomination. Quite Candidly that is unfair. Surely Val Daly and Tomas Tierney deserved nominations. But there is only one recipe for this. Galway must start winning again in both League and Championship. Mayo, the Connacht champions, have got plenty of nominations. Roscommon only one.

Referees Annual Dinner The Association of Referees (Connacht Branch), are holding their Annual Dinner at the Galwegian Football Club in Glenina on Saturday, February 22. This is the Association's 17th consecutive dinner and its the first occasion the function is being held in the dubhouse. This year the president is Joe Tighe, with Michael Roche as Treasurer and Pearse O'Toole as the Hon Secretary. The
