SAM M G I ES S E I L CHAMPIONSHIP C L M A UR ' P CA OU N

Glory Days Ahead If This Team Perseveres
T h e r e a r e T W O w a y s of looking at last Sunday's defeat b y Offaly in the All Ireland S . H . final on the score Offaly 2-11; G a l w a y 1-12. It w o u l d b e very easy to b e critical of s o m a n y a s p e c t s of o u r a p p r o a c h . D i d w e really g o u p with no little hope of winning o r w a s that a Cyril Farrell facade? H o w c o m e w e continue to b e so generous in winning All-Irelands for other counties. In m a k ing the s a m e mistakes as w e m a d e in 1981. T h e r e w e r e times w h e n I seemed to b e in the mid dle of that s a m e b a d d r e a m . Bernie F o r d e , s t r e a k i n g i n , turning always o n the s a m e side and shooting aimlessly or w i d e . W e s e e m e d to h a v e so little combina tion. T h e inevitability of it all w a s s o obvious m a t I predicted a n Offa ly g o a l just before half time to the Press col l e a g u e from Galway beside m e . It w a s all s o sad. And you w o n d e r e d would the maroon and white E V E R taste an All Ireland success again. W e have tasted defeat in 8 of our last 9 All Ireland finals between F. (1971, 73, 7 4 and '83) a n d H (75, 79, '81 and *85). Thats putting the scene in con text. W h a t is it that is missing in us? H a v e w e gone soft? Always the bridesmaid, seldom the bride! It would b e so easy to be full of despair; to give up the ghost; say w e just don't have it. W e can provide g o o d entertain ment but w e are a soft touch -- a Bunch of Losers. Thats, as I have said, one w a y of looking at last Sunday.

The Other W Y A
The other w a y is the hard option just n o w . This is a relatively young team with many more y o u n g stars in t h e substitute panel like Pat Malone, Gerry Mclnemey, Sean Treacy, John Cummins, John Murphy, Anthony Cunn ingham. Michael Mooney . . . eager to jump onto the team. A year is a long time to wait but w e must persevere with this bunch and there will be many glory days ahead. Ex perience at winning w e have learnt at under-age level in hurling in the past decade. This is beginning to pay of! and the ex perience, though harsh, garnered by our young hurling lions last Sunday will stand them a n d
