JOHN O'CONNOR (R.I.P.)
'Harry, my father will look after him'. These very deep and sincere words of sympathy were expressed to Harry O'Connor last Friday at the funeral of his son John. Peter Murphy from Ballina (son of the late Sean) said these words and was among the thousands of mourners who attended the very sad and tragic death of John O'Connor. Galway City was shocked with the news of his death last week. Son of Harry and Phil O'Connor of Loughnane Terrace, Mervue, John lost his life while swimming on a lake in San Francisco. 21-year-old John had just completed a three year Electronics course at Regional Technical College, Galway and had been in America for the Summer months. He was to return in October. J o h n , of course, followed in the footsteps of his father Harry, in being a great sportsman. Apart from his brilliance as a student at St. Joseph's College (Bish) and the RTC, his first sport was soccer. He graduated from Crescent A F C as a juvenile and showed in later years great maturity and control in his favourite position of centre half. He went on to be Secretary of Crescent for some years. Recently he played with Renmore and I believe that his plans after his return would be to play once again with Crescent. John was the eldest of Harry and Phil's four children. I have no doubt when I say that it must have been the biggest funeral to go through Galway in years. People from all walks in life, professional, business and all sports as well as friends and family from all over the country, England and America. I extend to Harry, Phil and their children Peter, Martina and Patrick, our deepest sympathy.

international match. He is played mostly up front and on the left wing. 25-year-old M i c h a e l L y n g who has played first team football on 67 occasions is reported as t the club's third leading goalscorer. He scored 11 goals and is played regularly as a forward. L y n g b y also has a f o r m i d a b l e back four, having only conceded 34 goals in 30 games. The goalkeeper P e r P o u l s e n (32) is a well known international while three of the backs have international experience also. According to club PR Manager Jongen Lykke, Poulsen is a vastly experienced goalkeeper who is renowned for his positional play and excellent reflexes. The back four are highly organised, largely because they have been playing as a unit for well over 100 games. T o m O l y c z y k (26) has 248 first team appearances behind himn and 18 U-21 internationals. He plays at right back. Playing sweeper is L a r s S o r e n s e n (30). He has played two U-21 inter nationals and 178 first team matches. Central defender J o h n L a r s e n (23) has represented his country on two occasions and has played seven U-21 inter nationals and has made 107 first team appearances. Left back P e t e r P a c k n e s s is no newcomer to first team football and has 153 first team games behind him. Lyngby, a part time and semi professional side, are one of the most successful teams in the Danish League. Founded in 1921, the club fought its way from the Third Division in 1975 to finish second in the League this year. The club has its own ground and is located six miles outside Copen hagen, in Lyngby. Says PR Manager Jongen Lykke, 'we try to play attacking football, but really we are a very skillful side. W e like to play football.' Mary O'Connor. SEAN MURPHY (R.I.P.)
Ballina and Connacht rugby have lost one of the greatest of the game's gentlemen. On 27th July, Sean Murphy died peacefully at his home in Ballina. One spent very l i t t l e t i m e in S e a n Murphy's company before experiencing the kindness and generosity that were synonomous with the man. Certainly the game of rugby has lost out with the passing of Sean. Before he turned his energies to the administra tion of the club, he was an accomplished player with Ballina and he also refereed for many years. He was the club's delegate on the Connacht Branch Council for the past 21 years. During that time he served on various c o m m i t t e e s and was elected as President of the Connacht Branch in 197475 season, when the famous All Blacks visited Galway. This was the centenary year of the IRFU. At this time of his life he also served on the IRFU executive commit tee as the Connacht delegate for some years. Earlier this year Sean saw his club Ballina, being upgraded to Senior Football and this indeed was a fitting reward for all his labours down through the years. Sean was elected as Patron of the Ballina Club seven years ago, after s e r v i n g the club as President for the previous 27 years. His wife Eithne and their seven children
