Last week the Galway Wine Club celebrated it's 21 birthday with a fabulous banquet at the Salthill Hotel with t h e u s u a l wide selection of wines to be tasted by members and guests. The French champagne reception was followed by Galway Bay oysters, a brill Portuguese, lemon sorbet and white wine. The pheasant main dish was followed with a red Italian port, and finally a unique French wine with the cheese and fruit dessert. The delightful banquet was honoured with the presence of the Deputy Mayor Bridie O'Flaherty, the French Commercial Attache Mon. Phillipe Moreau, Mr Jaoao Pinto of the commercial bureau of the Portuguese embassy and his wife Marie Anne.

Danny was named the N . 1 o by the Guild in 1969 as he was the first ever to receive the medal. The wine Club has a membership of about 50 and at present there is a waiting list for membership. The Club meets once a month during winter and spring for a meal and wine tasting at the Salthill Hotel where Chef Roche cooks a superb meal to go with the wines suggested by Danny Lydon. The club is unique in that it is a non-profit

A large gathering of dele gates attended the recent meeting of Galway City Comhairle Ceantair -- North & East held in Richardson's, Eyre Square. Motions for the forth coming Ard Fheis were debated at length and three motions were agreed to go forward. Many speakers were concerned about the ex cessively high rates of taxes and because there is no longer an incentive to work. The Youth Employ ment Levy was considered unfair as it is deducted from gross income and not just taxable income, there fore the lower income group to be in the P.A.Y.E. system have to pay this levy. It was suggested that this scheme be abolished as the money collected was not being used to create employment for our young people. E.E.C. grants being made available to this country were also in need of urgent attention as un claimed grants were cost ing us millions of pounds annually. This is especially true of Fiogra grants be cause companies or indivi duals wishing to make claims are getting no assist ance guidance from the present government Speak;rs asked that this probler
