Tragic plane crash caused by broken wing
BY UNA SINNOTT The aeroplane which crashed in the grounds of the Galway Cricket Club last month, killing both people on board, had lost a wing prior to the crash, according to a preliminary report. According to a preliminary report on the tragedy by the Air Accident Investigation Unit of the Department of Transport, the loss of a significant portion of the aircraft's starboard wing caused the plane to crash in Lydican just four minutes after it took off from Galway Airport. The pilot of the aircraft and a friend were flying home to Belgium after spending a weekend in Galway when the crash occurred on Monday September 19. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the plane spin out of a cloud with a large part of its right wing missing just prior to the crash. The wing was later found in a field 422 metres away from the crash site. The AAIU is continuing its investigation into the accident and a final report on the tragedy will be published in the coming months
