Galway's link with its past will be the cause for dual celebration next year as the cily will celebrate its SOOth anniversry and also the 100th anniversary of one of its most famous literary Tigures, Nora Barnacle. Nora, the woman who so beguiled James Joyce and eventually became his wife, was to feature prominently in his work, Ulysses, as Molly Bloom, and so was to provide a very real link between this city and Ireland's famous literary son. Already the Barnacle cult in Galway is considerable, the former dwelling place of the famous Galwegian, a little cottage in Bowling Green in the city centre, fetched a flne price at auction two years ago. Now Nora's name is to be even more prominently displayed In the city, for it has been adopted by the owners of the city's newest public house at Mainguard Street. Formerly the Golden Pheasant and the Genoa, Nora Barnacle's now offers Galwegians a real taste of Joyce in the literary and "spiritual" sense. The proprietors of "Nora's" local businessman John Joyce and his partner, hit on the Barnacle theme when discussing the city's plans for its Quincentennial celebrations. Said John "We had felt that the city centre lacked a certain display a number of very for tunchtime and in the short variety when it came to public attractive photographs relating week that it has been opened, houses with atmosphere, and it to her and Intend to build up a has already begun to develop its just happened that we were stock of memorabilia relating to own set of "regulars". discussing plans for the Nora as time goes on.
