SAM MAGUIRE'S G.A.A. COLUMN
G.A.A. CONGRESS The G.A.A. congress has come to Galway for the second time. Once again it was a great organisational success for the Galway Co. Board and its various sub-committees. While the Congress itself had very little meat in it, the cabaret, hosted by the inimitable Paschal Spelman in the Great S o u t h e r n Hotel on Saturday night was, as President Paddy Buggy said on Sunday "the most enjoyable half-time we ever had in the G.A.A." Paschal with a few of his "Taste of Galway" artists notably Ann Melia, whose singing talents and stage presence have developed so much since I heard her last, literally brought down the house which had 451 guests seated. There were many other highlights of a memorable weekend, not least the President's own , speech and his very gracious tribute to Kerry, the address by His Lordship Dr. Eamonn Casey who, as he says himself, has the record "of having closed a G.A.A. club and of founding one namely Monaleen in Limerick". A l t o g e t h e r a great weekend and Galway can feel proud of itself. "GOAL" FAST On Saturday next, Holy Saturday, a "Goal" Fast in aid of Third World Charity, in this case India and Ethiopia, will be held in Eyre Square, Galway, with prominent Galway G.A.A. stars taking part. This charity organisation founded by John O'Shea (Evening Press) has, with the help of sportsmen and supporters, raised much money for worthwhile causes. You can expect to see John Connolly and his brothers Joe and Michael, Niall Mclnerner, Tom Naughton, Tony ed with the benefit of Regan, Danno Heaslip teamwork. Hibs reach Final at Second Attempt
Hibernians 4 Merville/Carraroe 1 Galway H i b e r n i a n s , tipped by many to capture the Connacht Junior Cup this season have made their way into the final when they outplayed Marville/Carraroe in the semi final replay at Terryland Park on Sunday. Its been over 30 years since Hibs captured the Connacht Junior Cup, 1951 to be exact, but on Sunday's display them must start favourites to capture the trophy when they oppose Dynamo Blues (Tuam) on April 17. Hibs keeper Tom Lally who played soccer for Glasgow Celtic, Sligo Rovers, St. Pat's Ath., Athlone Town a n d G a l w a y Rovers will be playing in his first Connacht Junior Cup final when he lines out on April 17. Tom, who came into the Hibernian side earlier this season, got little to do on Sunday as the twin striking force of John T i e r n e y a n d Colm N a u g h t o n tore the Mervile defence to shreds especially in the first half. Central defenders Dave Daly and John Cleary w e r e in c o m m a n d throughout. In centrefield Hibs played Joe Devlin, Jackie McSweeney and Mike Rafter and this trio made sure that their front-runners got ample opportunity to show their skills and the strikers did not disappoint their followers. Gerald Flaherty played up front for most of the game and was in position to watch Merville full back Colm Farrell put through his own goals for the opener and Ger laid on the pass for Naughton to score his sides second goal. John Walsh at right-back and Eddie Ward on the left saw to it that Merville's approach down the wings were limited. Before dealing with the game, a suggestion for what it's worth. I would like to see Joe Devlin line out at right back, in the final with John Walsh at midfield and Ger Flaherty at left of midfield in order to attack from the back with Tierney and Naughton up front in a 4-4-2 formation. again with a move which was started by Eddie Ward who parted to Ger Flaherty down the left wing. Flaherty's centre left Naughton with an easy task of scoring from close in. After 24 minutes Hibs went three up. Naughton availed of a defensive error before drawing the Merville keeper Carney to score. Owen M c L o u g h l i n missed what appeared an easy chance to get one back for the visitors before half-time when he shot wide from close in. Six minutes into the second half John Walsh saw his shot deflected for a corner by substitute Sean Rooney. After sixteen minutes of the half Joe Reilly came on for Mike Rafter and sixteen minutes later Reilly was substituted by Pat Ward much to the surprise of the fair sized attendance. Merville got one back 33 minutes into the half when Eddie Devins headed to the roof of the net from close in. With four minutes remaining Hibs scored the goal of the match. Jackie McSweeney played a long ball out of defence to the right wing where John Tierney beat a defender before playing an inch perfect pass across the goalmouth for substitute Pat Ward to score. If Hibs can reproduce Sundays form in the final then the Connacht Junior Cup should be theirs for the t a k i n g , but in my opinion. Dynamo Blues will be no pushover.
