Vandals Make Playgrounds Dangerous
C a s t l e P a r k residents a r e seeing r e d b e c a u s e o f t h e c o n d u c t of v a n d a l s in t h e a r e a . Swings p r o v i d e d by Galway Corporation at C a s t l e P a r k h a v e h a d t o be removed because of c o m p l a i n t s from residents t h a t p e o p l e from o t h e r a r e a s a r e utilising t h e swings late at night. And in Mervue a p l a y g r o u n d w a s littered with b r o k e n glass it w a s c l a i m e d b y Cllr. Bridie O ' F l a h e r t y . . T h e M e r v u e Cllr. told a m e e t i n g of G a l w a y B o r o u g h Council that thoughtless v a n d a l s a r e defacing p u b l i c property and making p l a y g r o u n d s d a n g e r o u s for young children. Cllr. O ' F l a h e r t y a d v o c a t ed t h a t if p l a y i n g facilities a r e t o be p r o v i d e d in future c o r p o r a t i o n h o u s i n g estates t h e y s h o u l d b e fenced off s o t h a t they c o u l d be closed at night t o p r e v e n t " r o u g h elements" using them. Discussing the action the Borough Council has taken t o solve t h e c o m p l a i n t s of t h e C a s t l e P a r k residents association Mr. P. J. McGovern, Acting Town Clerk said t h a t t h e provision o f a p e r m a n e n t p l a y i n g field w o u l d be in t h e n e a r future until p l a y i n g s p a c e in Merlin Park and Ballybane would h a v e been d e v e l o p e d . Assistant C o u n t y M a n a g er M r . Peter K e a r n s revealed t h a t C a s t l e P a r k Residents h a d been offered an a r e a for use as a temporary playing a r e a for c h i l d r e n . Mr. Kearns continued t h a t p l a n s for a m a j o r h o u s e b u i l d i n g p r o g r a m m e in t h e a r e a includes a C h u r c h , School, Shopping centre a n d a c o m m u n i t y centre.

Cllr. H e n r y O ' C o n n o r , told t h e m e e t i n g t h a t t h e h o u s e s n u m b e r 109 t o 113 h a d n o p r o p e r access t o t h e front a n d t h e o n l y w a y residents could b r i n g their c a r s t o t h e front of t h e h o u s e s w a s in d r i v i n g o v e r a green a r e a . H e a d d e d t h a t t h e residents n o w w a n t e d
the Corporation to provide a r o a d in front of t h e h o u s e s . Mr. Gerry Leydon, B o r o u g h E n g i n e e r said t h a t t h e front of t h e h o u s e s b o r d e r e d o n t o t h e green a r e a a n d a car p a r k w a s twenty yards away. It w a s decided t h a t t h e m a t t e r be l o o k e d i n t o a n d will be r e p o r t e d b a c k t o t h e Council.
