Exams, Exams !
Exams! T h e y a r e here again! T h e talk o f the t o w n for,weeks to come. Young people i n the throes o f them. Teachers i n the midst o f them. Parents i n the trauma of them. Daily conversation interspersed with them. Heaven taken u p with them! N o let-up until Galway Races, it w o u l d seem. T h e n following t h e results, ecstacy for some, inevitably disappointment for others. In t h e meantime o u r prayers! T h e age-old questions: Have exams become obsessive? Are they the proper gauge for measuring academic growth? Is there an over emphasis on a young person's mental attainments, to the exclusion of other processes of the soul? o f a hug, a handshake, a pat o n t h eback, a w o r d o f encouragement, a smiling face. Sympathy a n d sensitivity m u s t be n u r t u r e d b y m a n d a t e o f Jesus C h r i s t -- to w a r m aworld growing cold with programmed efficiency and technological expertise. Thank God for young people who push beds for Trocaire, who organise charity walks for whatever cause, who (this very evening!) are completing a cycle hike from Galway to Dublin in aid of multiple sclerosis research. Their example must inspire many others to score A's and B's in the art of loving the neighbour for the love o f G o d . Fr. Robert G O L F E. Lee.
