SAM MAGUIRE'S CHAMPIONSHIP COLUMN

THE END OF THE DREAM FOR 1982
Last Sunday's defeat by Offaly in the All-Ireland S.F. semi final on the score Offaly 1--12 to Gal way's 1--11 is only the end of the road for 1982. But it is part of the build up for bigger days ahead. The only thing that beat Galway last Sunday was a lack of experience of the big time. This they have under their belt now. But in losing so narrowly the Galway team made one of the finest comebacks into the face of what at times was a gale in the second half. This was a very gutsy Galway performance if a little green at times. (Half time s c o r e s G a l w a y 1--6 Offaly 1--5). THE SENIOR GAME I present hereunder the figures of the game:

S.F.C. final between Annaghdown and Mountbellew is top of the bill in a 3 game programme in Tuam on Sunday when a special souvenir programme produced by Co. F. Bd. P.R.O. Jim Carney will be on sale. This is G a l w a y ' s l i t t l e All Ireland and the referee for the occasion is Sean McManamon (Salthill). All this year I have been fancying Mountbellew to win the title and I won't part company with them here. They have been playing badly since their great win over Tuam Stars. The other games are the M.F.C. semi final between Salthill (holders) and Milltown at 1.15 p.m. the J.F.C. final between An Spideal and Dunmore MacHales at 2.45 p.m. and the Co. Final at 4.30 p.m. It is great to see the Co. final played in August a n d I look forward to a marvellous day's football. Space precludes me this week from including a piece on Fr. Griffins J.F.L. win over Oranmore Maree. Till next week and the account of the Co. final and a preview of the h u r l i n g All I r e l a n d fagaim slan agaibh.
