Nora Gaimon, a native of Bama, Co. Galway, is celebrating her 86th Binhday and whom I met recently. Nora went to Galway last as a passenger on the "S.S. Maasdam" in 1 9 6 3 and s t i l l remembers the lovely day as the Liner floated into Galway Bay. She sends greetings to her brother Jolmny, his daughter Maureen, son-in-law S e a m u s D a v e r n (a butcher in Shantalla). Nora lives in New Jersey and she still visits McGovcrn's Tavern most weekends to enjoy Ceili music and a bit of fun. A Good Idea. The talk of a Liner visiting Galway prompts me to share a recent conversation I had with Brege Ward of Ward Travel here in New York, who are researching the possibility of starting a Cruise from New York to Ireland. Ward's Travel already operate a very successful Irish Cruise to the Bahamas, with only Irish entertainment on board. Many people over here, do not like air travel and would much prefer to
At the Spiddal annual agricultural show held recently Josephine Conneely won the first prize in the Dog show. The Philbin O' Dea cup was presented by Paddy Philbin and Betty O' Dea who judged the competition. go by sea. The Irish Cruise idea would say, take six days crossing the Atlantic, stopping at Galway. Passengers could tour by bus with perhaps the Liner used as a hotel, stopping at other parts of Ireland. Remember the 60's when 30 ships visited Ireland aimually from here? Those were the days! Visitors. I just enjoyed a visit from Patrick and Mary Gannon and their two exhausted boys, Mark and Noel, who are enjoying their holiday in Big Apply and Boston. These nice people are shortly returning to their native Kilbatmon, Tuam, and it was lovely to see them, Good News. I was delighted my acquaintance Rev. Michael Fleming, a native of Co. Mayo (and a cousin of the Dunleavy's of the Sacre Cocur Hotel) was recently elevated to the rank of Monsignor. This honour is long overdue to a fine priest who for 40 years has been celebrating the 11.15 Mass at the Blessed Sacrament Church at Jackson Hts. and who founded and directed the C.Y.O. at Whitestonc, N.Y. Late Brian Maguire. I was sad to learn of the death of Brian Maguire, a young Kerry man of 27 years who died of cancer at his home here iii Jackson Hts. There was a huge Kerry turn-out at his funeral, celebrated by Rev. Tom Dillon, of Joan of Arc Church. Brian's sister is Helen Lopez, a ticket agent for Aer Lingus, N. Yorit. WUh' Fahy.
