DE DANANN CONQUER U.S.
Galway's premier trad itional folk group De Danann have taken the shores of Amerikay b y storm. After a few false starts due to the air traffic controllers dispute De Danann finally hit the U.S. on 13th August, to open a three month long tour with two sell out shows at New York's famed Bottom Line Club. In fact, so good was the reception meted out to them by the normally placid yankie audiences that the Bottom Line Club took the almost unprecedented step of rebooking the band for a repeat performance on August 31st. The remainder of De Danann's attempt at world d o m i n a c e will e n t a i l travelling over 2,000 miles and will include appear a n c e s at f e s t i v a l s in Louisville, Kentucky and Kansas. They also play a series of dates in Texas, and New Mexico d u r i n g late September and after a period on the west coast, the tour culminates with a big concert in the Town Hall, New York, on November 1st. On a local note De Danann hope to fit in some dates in Ireland before Christmas to promote "Star Spangled Molly" and a single from the album "Molly" will be on release here shortly.

A welcome visitor to LydonHouse Catering Centre, Galway, during the week was Mrs. Sheila O'Hanrahan Lawlor, the reigning Rose of Tralee. Sheila wished good luck to the LydonHouse team of Caterers who are preparing to set sail for Tralee to cater at the Rose Ball which opens the Festival of Tralee. This is the first major function that LydonHouse have undertaken outside of its home territory but with an ever increasing demand for this service they are confident that it will be the first of many.

It was the biggest thrill of his life and is hopeful that his horse will be a winner of the coveted Galway Plate in 1982. Tom, who is a Manager at the "Rosie O'Grady" down town restaurant, N.Y.C. is also looking forward to the Galway Centennial Banquet. " T h e Bucking B u l l " It's not surprising that Galway and Salthill should be without the "Bucking Bull". Congratulations. However, perhaps I should make some folk aware of the unfortunate accidents which in some cases has caused paralysis in some areas. This past week "Magazine", a weekly T.V. series did a stint on the "Bucking Bull" and I can only say to those who intend to try out the contraption to be very careful. It is capable of causing servere bodily harm and it certainly was pitiful to see one nineteen year old c o m p l e t e l y paralysed from the neck down, he has had to be fed and unable to even move a wheel chair. Other accidents shown were broken hips, crushed elbows and broken hands. The machine is a good idea but when used in bars as they are here having a few drinks tends to make one reckless and the machine becomes a lethal weapon and a certain method to receive a fracture of some kind. Proper supervision, I'm sure, will be the only solution to few accidents especially to keep the machine free of drunks and unfit personnel. Congratulations. It's refreshing to know that the Galway Corpora tion has heart and humility and above all respect for the n a m e " T o f t " . I was delighted to see the picture in a copy of the Advertiser, dated July 1st issue, it was the first news of the newly elected Mayor of Galway.

Back f r o m G a l w a y . Talked with John Carroll today, who returned from Galway this past Sunday. John was most compli mentary of the reception he and his group received in
Galway, and is looking forward to meeting a lot of the folk from Galway at the Centennial Dinner on October 24th. John, who is President of the Galway Society here in New York gave me the news of Bishop Eamonn Casey being in attendance at the dinner. It should be a big event in New York and one which I'm sure this writer will enjoy as well as a great number of Galway folks here in the U.S. Also returned from Galway and his native Tuam is Tom Clarke who was fortunate to be able to see his horse "Aran Islands" win at
You see newspapers from Galway get here three to five weeks later even though they are air mailed from the Editor, Paddy O'Gorman. This writer is delighted with the very unique unaminous selection of Claude Toft as Mayor of our City. Let's hope the genial Claude will have a healthy and perfect session as Mayor of Galway. Galway City has recognised one of its great benefactors, he and his family before him have done lots for the poor of Galway and it is befitting that Claude should gain the office, so often fought bitterly to obtain, by councillors in the past.
