Rahoon Park Tenants A s s o c i a t i o n is u p in a r m s over recent r e m a r k s m a d e by M a y o r Bridie O ' F l a h e r t y and Assistant County Manager, Mr. Peter Kearns. The Association has accused the Asst. Co. Manager of making " s l o p p y " statements and h a s q u e s t i o n e d h i s m o t i v e in d e s c r i b i n g t h e R a h o o n flats as " a s g o o d as l u x u r y flats a n d a s well h e a t e d a s l u x u r y hotels and hospitals!" b u t let a n i n d e p e n d e n t b o d y d e t e r m i n e t h i s fact s a y t h e Association. In a s t a t e m e n t f r o m t h e Rahoon Park Tenants Association they point out this. M r . K e a r n s is a civil servant employed by you a n d I -- t h e tax p a y e r w h o s e j o b it is t o m a n a g e t h e city and county. His role is t o s u p p l y t h e city c o u n c i l l o r s w i t h t h e h a r d facts arid t o a i d t h e m in T h e Association further their function of r u n n i n g the hit o u t at M a y o r B r i d i e city. T h e exhibition of Bernard R e y n o l d ' s w a t e r c o l o u r s at K e n n y ' s G a l l e r y gives j o y both t o the watercolour e n t h u s i a s t a n d t o t h e lover of l a n d s c a p e p a i n t i n g . T h e s e works extend the usual r a n g e of watercolour r e m a r k a b l y . T h i s is d u e in part t o the artist's use of acrylic water-paints, but a l s o in n o small w a y t o his i n t e n s e s t u d y of a i r a n d light a n d of their effects o n t h e a p p e a r a n c e s of t h i n g s .

Variety, h o w e v e r , is o n e of t h e s t r i k i n g t h i n g s a b o u t this exhibition, a n d there are several paintings which s h o w l a n d s c a p e in t h e m o s t smiling of m o o d s -- placid a n d gently c o l o u r e d b e n e a t h h i g h b l u e skies fleeced with cloud. Very o f t e n , a s in N o s . 7, A considerable n u m b e r of t h e s e p i c t u r e s s h o w d a r k . 11 a n d 24, t h e t r e a t m e n t of

objects is C h i n e s e . T h e y become wraiths obtruding through a shimmering of mist a n d light. I h a v e never seen t h e u n s p e a k a b l e light o f Connemara captured so c o m p l e t e l y a s in " L i f t i n g . Fog. Lough Ramor". In " B o g o f Allen I I " . recognisable form has dissolved entirely i n t o a c a r n i v a l of greens and y e l l o w s . T h i s is how abstraction occurs most pleasingly -- n o t a s a cerebral thing imposed by the painter o n the real w o r l d , b u t as a n u l t i m a t e s u b l i m a t i o n of the real a p p e a r a n c e s of t h i n g s .
