Sam McGuire's G.A.A. Roundabout
FRANK EVERS In last week's issue I talked about all the former Galway players to be seen in th Galway dressing r o o m i m m e d i a t e l y after t h e famous N.F.L. final victory. Two more I forgot to mention were Frank Evers, Mattie McDonagh's former midfield partner of the 50's and former Galway minor Sean C a l l a g h a n of St. Michael's. In fact when big Frank Evers called in big Mattie called for 3 cheers for Frank Evers. Other visitors included Roscommon Co. Board Chairman Michael O ' C a l l a g h a n and team captain Tony McManus both of whom were very generous in their praise for Galway. Looking back to the 19S6 midfield of Mattie McDonagh and Frank Evers I wonder if the county ever had a better midfield. BARRY BRENNAN He is very young at 22 to captain a team to a N.F.L. success but then young Brennan has an almost insatiable appetite for the game. In St. J a r l a t h ' s College, Tuaro he was one of the stars of the team which lost to Carmelite College, Moate in 1976. As a team mate then he had Mattie Coleman of Monivea, who is now a Garda in Ennis. Barry is a sales representat-ive of Adidas and has been the leading light of the return to football power of Ballinasloe* St. Grellans, champions of Galway for the past 2 years. But to Barry Brennan's eternal credit he did not let the fact that his car was stolen from outside the Ashling Hotel the night before t h e Roscommon game upset his concentrat ion for the final. In fact it was never mentioned by him on the day of the game. E v e r y b o d y was h a p p y afterwards to know that it was found safe and sound again after the game. sending off is totally out of character. He was the victim of provocation and a good act of "diving". But he will have learnt the very valuable lesson of never retaliating under provocation never. FEILE NA nGAEL I'm thankful to Feile na nGael main organiser Pat Guthrie for sending me on some details of this year's Feile to be held in Galway again from Sunday 21st June to Sunday 28th. Much of the official opening is centred in Loughrea. The action swings to Castlegar on Monday, Kinvara of Tuesday, Ballinasloe on Friday and the grand finale a t t e n d e d by P r e s i d e n t Hillery here in Galway on the Sunday. I hope to be present at all events of this years Feile. More details later. McNAMEE AWARD WINNERS 1980 Best Co. Final Programme: M e a t h F o o t b a l l Final. E d i t e d by T h o m a s J . The U14 team under t h e guidance of Jimmy Duggan had a 3--2 to 1--0 win over Tuam in the Feile na nGael c o m p e t i t i o n , with s t a r performers in Jimmy Ward, John Hughes, Mark Breen, Eugene Keville, J i m m y McCarthy and Kieran Diviney. The inter club league U14 finals are fixed for the "Plots" on Saturday 23rd May. Final: Davy McDonagh v Tom Fahy. Losers group: David Croke v Michael Laffey. Davy McDonagh beat Tom Fahy's on Saturday. Fahy's h a d a previous victory over Davy so the stage is set for a thriller. NEW INN WIN C o n g r a t s t o New I n n Vocational School on winning the All Ireland Senior Voc. Schools H. Title last Sunday defeating Ennis Voc. School by 4--7 to 2--6. County star Michael McGrath was the man of the match. All concerned deserve credit on yet another great Galway hurling achievement. Hurling is really going great guns in our county.
