Christmas Art Competition Results
What an excellent entry this year! Clearly the theme: "Galway in 2001" inspired very imaginative entries bringing forward talent and mind-boggling ideas that is a great credit to Art teachers and parents who encourage young people to paint and draw. Congratulations to our overall winner, seventeen years old Fiona Cahill of Presentation College, Tuam for her exciting concept of a city in the future which is quite obviously Galway by her selection of our famous landmark. Its a very good drawing and Fiona comes from a talented family whose members have won prizes in this competition down through the years. Well done Fiona. It was interesting to see the various interpretations of what the future holds from the various age groups. For younger people the future is seen as an exciting life style, often based on the many science fiction T.V. programmes currently in vogue or in reality prompted by Carl Sagan or the Space Shuttle. Other young children simply projected themselves into the future with one rather charming entry of a woman with the simple caption "in 201 I will be a lady". Older children do not see a happy future. Our politicians would do well to see the genuine fear of Nuclear War, Third World revolutions and mass environment destruction so vividly depicted by these, at times, powerful artists. It was a rewarding competition to receive and the judges were pleased and stimulated by the entries. There will be an exhibition of all the winners in Kennys Art Gallery early in January which will be well worth visiting and school groups will be catered for.
