W o o d f o r d - firm who manufacture wind chargers. They had them up to 7 KW, and that is enough to run an average house even at the best o f t i m e s , or alternatively, run storage heating during the night. If there is something that we have plenty of in this country it surely is wind, and aside from the natural wind sources, there must be enough generated at the average Corporation or County council meeting to power several windmills. Seriously though, if one considers someplace such as the Aran Islands where there is always some wind, it would seem like a logical course for the E.S.B. or the local Co-op to install several large wind generating plants to supplement or even replace the present fuel hungry diesel generating plant. There was some information on the U.C.G. stand concerning their 'Wind and Wave' research projects and I only hope that they can get sufficient funding to pursue this most urgent study. We hear a lot of anti-nuclear pressure from various organisations who have no alternatives to offer, they even had a stand, giving out stickers, saying 'Nuclear power, no thanks', but they didn't really have any concrete counter measures to offer. If the U.C.G. project is properly funded and supported, perhaps it may be the alternative they need, but it would want to happen fairly soon. The rest of the exhibition was interesting in a general way as industrial exhibitions go, particularly the heat pumps and other alternative energy, or energy

i h e r e u e a r e a a a i n I must learn not to be always praising the weather as soon as the sun shows it's face for a couple of hours, because no sooner have I made a comment on it than at the best it pours rain and even now and then it actually snows. There was a lot of sense in the old sayings that the people had long ago, how many times did our grandparents warn us that March, if it came in like a lamb, always went out like a lion. Oh there's no doubt about it, they knew what they were talking about. I suppose that they had to, when one considers that there were no weather forecasts, and it was up to the person themselves to figure out what the day was going to do before they went fishing or sowing seed or cutting turf or whatever, and even if they were going for a walk, they would, if in doubt, carry a raincoat over tiie arm, just to be sure; when was the last time any of ye saw someone walking with a raincoat over their arm. I went to see the Energex exhibition on Sunday last and I must say that I was overwhelmed by the huge crowd present. I never saw anything like it; I was about ten minutes just looking for someplace to park the car. Perhaps the most interesting stand for me was the

conservation methods, including insulation. I enjoyed browsing through all of the local stands, and I marvelled at the growth of some companies since this time last year, like Security Services who have branched out into communications and fire prevention. I was particularly impressed with Northern Telecom's stand with all of the wonderful modern and reproduction telephones, and I thought what a pity that our telephone service couldn't match up to it. Finally a word of congratulation to the organising committee, they did a splendid job and it was well worth the effort. The next major event to look out for there will be the annual boat show over the Easter weekend, but I'll have more about that for ye next week. God bless ye for now and be careful that ye don't fall into one of the holes in the road, the town is riddled with them! Dick Byrne
