SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT INFLATION
Inflation is becoming a household word these days, and not surprisingly, for it is in the household that its effects are most felt. The pound in our pockets is worth less and less, not just on the international money market but in the local shop. As the value of wages decreases, workers d e m a n d larger wages, naturally. This increases the cost of what they are producing, so their wages are again worth less. If this vicious circle continues, affairs will go on as now, w i t h strikes, stoppages, g o - s l o w s and general frustration all round. As inflation increases, the price of housing goes up. This situation is not helped by speculation such as is rampant in Galway. The price of housing now is causing much hardship, especially to young families. Inflation can do our society nothing but harm. But can it be stopped? Maybe. If we don't stop it may well stop itself. Right now, the price of oil is going up and up, and it is less readily available. Imagine a world without any oil - no petrol for cars, planes, trains or ships; no oil-fired central heating and less electricity.
