SETGAU^ADVERTISERGALWAYADVERrSERC PADRAIG PEARSE, A SPECIAL MAN

These days, when in some circles the name of Padraig Pearse is spoken, it is said with bated breath; these people standing in awe of that man. But for other his name is dismissed contemptuously with a shrug. It appears that o n the one hand Pearse is thought o f as a martyr, a man who sacrificed everything and died for his country. On- the other hand, he is called a fool, suicidal, a man w h o cared nothing for the lives o f his fellow country man but "hurled the little streets upon the great, had they but courage equal t o desire." Should Pearse be treated thus? Should his image be placed high on a pedestal, untouchable, but idolised? Or should he be despised, his arms ridiculed, all that he s t o o d for crushed and forgotten? I say n o . N o t o all of these questions. I believe that Padraig Pearse was a man, a human being, like any other human being. He had a man's ideals, ambitions, and indeed, failings. And y e t , with all these, he was n o ordinary man. He had one special vocation, and was committed t o the task o f freeing a country which was enslaved in every way possible, and w o u l d fulfill his duty, n o matter what the cost. I agree with all o f Pearses aims, especially o n e of removing all foreign influence from the country he loved. This would mean that Irish rule would be restored bringing simple traditions back to life. This resurrection was what Pearse lived for and spent his brief manhood trying t o bring this about. Nowadays there is much controversy about the maintenance o f customs or their destruction, and it would be wetl t o listen t o , and appreciate Pearses views. Of course Pearse could never have forseen the inclusion o f Ireland in the E.E.C. This defeated his aim for Home Rule, because Ireland can never be considered totally independant, while relying o n the instructions o f Brussels. He was not a violent man by nature, but believed that all other resources being exhausted, man had t o live by the sword. His creed, as was that o f all other patriots, was that any step taken t o protect one's motherland was lawful in the e y e s o f G o d , be it violent or peaceful. Sadly, Pearse is ofen misread these days and many tragic acts o f violence have been committed, the perpetrators offering Pearses words as an excuse. In this, the Year o f the Child, much importance is attached t o the educational system. Pearse wrote about and spoke o f "the murder machine", the system which destroyed the minds o f children, which crushed thus natural instincts, their childish inquisitiveness, their creativity and their sheer hunger for knowledge. These were replaced with ready facts and figures, with timetables and ultimately, with exams. The pupil had t o be ground through the machine, and deposited, thirteen years later, perhaps, as either a miracle o f education, knowledge exuding from every pore, or else as a reject, a battered specimen n o t capable o f withstanding the regime, and therefore, not capable o f leading any type o f successful life. Pearse fought for a school where pupils would co-operate with teachers, and vice versa, b o y s learning every subject from only the best teachers. He had the earliest idea o f career guidance, and most important, teachers made an effort t o understand individuals. Unfortunately schools like St. Enda's are few and far between. And that "murder machine" which Pearse detested is still in operation. Much more thought, care, and planning must be given to the educational system in Ireland today, for we are still being ground through that huge machine. Therefore it must be realised that Pearse was a special man, one o f the chosen few, a man with a great destiny, and a duty to perform. I believe that he was very human, and did n o t begrudge others their luxuries; nor did he despise those w h o did not have the same views as he o n the freedom o f Ireland, but diligently worked on for the completion o f his work. He strove for the Ireland that all o f us true Irish people must strive for, an Ireland "Not Gaelic merely, but free also Catherine Carroll (16 yrs.) Not free merely but Gaelic also." Presentation Convent. A R E WE BEING RIPPED O F F At Christmas, we are all familiar with the age-old cry that Christmas is t o o commercialized. This is true but most people think so for all the wrong reasons. They quote the toy advertisments, the 5 0 p Santas in the shops and the pre-christmas "sales". But I think w e are being "ripped-off" in an even more serious fashion. We are being robbed o f the essential j o y o f Christmas. At Christmas h o w many young people see anyone aside from their family? How many visit their neighbours? (And I don't mean just to compare presents) This is not just a recent development, nor due solely t o the advertising and greed so apparent in today's Christmas. N o r is it due to the weather so conveniently unpleasant. We are destroying our own Christmas. The Christmas message is peace and goodwill to all mankind and we, like Scrooge, need a little taste of the milk of human kindness. Even if we d o stay at home at Christmas and avoid caroling on Christmas Eve, there is still a world o f hapiness we can give t o our own family. There are so many ways to make Christmas special if we only make an effort. You can make this Christmas a Christmas t o remember fondly when y o u are old. Just by making others happy. You'll be surprised how happy you'll be
