Galway

Advertiser,

STATEMENT BY COUNCILLOR TOM TIERNEY, INDEPENDENT LABOUR Dear Sir, May I through the medium of your paper, be allowed to put the facts before the electorate of the North East Ward as to why I am s t a n d i n g as an Independent Labour candidate in the forthcoming local elections. From the canvass I have already conducted, I have got

31st May; 1979 numerous enquiries from to put forward a candidate well meaning people as to as he would not receive the why I was not an official necessary support to be L a b o u r Candidate. I elected. I also informed the therefore owe it to both delegates that I was, and myself and the electorate to always would be committed explain the sequence of to the principle of voting for events that led up to this the thriteenth man, no matter what political unfortunate situation. Mr. Gerry Colgan - persuasion he or she was of, resigned his seat on the and for that reason and Galway Coporation thereby other I was going to support causing a vacancy for a Brendan Holland who was co-option. At a meeting of the candidate with the the Constituency Council of highest number of votes the Labour Party which was after the twelfth council h e l d p r i o r t o t h e member was elected at the Corporation meeting to fill last local elections. I the vacancy, a motion to put explained that this principle forward a Labour Candidate and the action I proposed to was discussed. At that take was in accordance with meeting I informed the the wishes of the people of delegates present that in my Galway which they clearly opinion it would be unwise showed through the ballot

box. I also explained to the meeting that during my c a n v a s s of C o u n t y Councillors a few months previously seeking support for Alderman Higgins' election to the Senate that I visited Councillor Holland both as a friend and a colleague on previous City Councils. I got an assurance from Councillor Holland of his support for our candidate. During our friendly chat the question of any future co-option to the City Council arose. I gave my word of honour to Councillor Holland that as he was the thirteenth man he would receive my support. Alderman Higgins also told that meeting that he also

p r o m i s e d support to Counsillor Holland if a future vacancy arose. The then Chairman of the C o n s t i t u e n c y Council advised the meeting that in his opinion it would not be in the best interest of the party to contest the seat as:a) No support was sought from other Council members for the party candidate and b) The hourable thing to do was to accede to the wishes of the Galway electorate expressed through the Ballot Box. I feel very saddened and hurt that after a lifetime of service to the party both at local and national level I

s h o u l d receive such treatment. My wife, sons and daughters and I have worked canvassing for the party candidate at several general e l e c t i o n s and one by-election, stood outside church gates on national c o l l e c t i o n days and organised fund raising activities down through the years, to receive treatment such as meted out to me. May I conclude by stating that I have at all times during my ninetten years as a member of the Galway Corporation strove to keep politics out of the Council Chamber for the benefit of Galway Citizens as a whole. Yours sincerely, THOMAS TIERNEY.
