Canvassing at the market last Saturday morning was a strong contingent of Fianna Fail candidates. Fianna Fail Candidates Stand On Their Good Record
Despite the fact that Fianna Fail are not presenting their election candidates at a press conference they have instead distributed the party's manifesto widely in a bid to acquaint the public with the party's election policy. Outlining the dramatic results obtained by the Fianna Fail party the manifesto states that in the 2 years since the general election Fianna Fail have got the country back on its feet again with more than 30,000 new jobs created during 1978, 6,400 of these for y o u t h s , inflation has decreased by 8% in 1978 compared with 21% in 1975. Nor has the party neglected the big issue of housing. More houses have been built since the party came into office, states the manifesto, 24,500 in 1977 and 25,500 in 1978. In some areas local councils have evaded their responsibilities as regards itinerants, the policy reads. But Fianna Fail stress that grants are available from central government to provide adequate facilities for these families; and the party proposes that all such grants be increased to 100% so that the itinerant problem will be tackled once and for all. Street violence at night receives particular attention in the party statement. It is suggested that a greater effort be made by local authorities to provide street lighting. "We believe that this would reduce street violence at night and greatly assist the gardai in their fight against crime the statement read. "Our policy is to secure the highest possible standard of mental and physical health and to make sure that no person will be denied medical care because of their inability to pay". Referring to the major health building p r o g r a m m e which is u n d e r w a y , the party statement pointed out that new hospitals are being built, existing hospitals improved and extended, and thousands of new appointments of medical, nursing and para medical personnel have been made. " T h a t Irish people through no fault of their own, should not be able to find work in this country is an affront to natural justice and it must be a burden on the conscience of our citizens in general." Today Fianna Fail's priority is to harness this record economic growth and ensure that they keep the country moving.

The question of lack of space in Galway Regional Hospital was strongly refuted by a Western Health Board Doctor on Friday last. The statement was issued in reply to a query by Cllr. Michael 6 Morain at the Western Health Board meeting when he asked if beds had to be placed in the corridors to facilitate further patients. In reply, Dr. O'Byrne pointed out that the hospital was at present accom modating the required number of patients it was originally intended for and no problems had been experienced as regards space so far.
