John J. O'Connor, Presi dent of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, with his wife Mary (natives of Lower Salthill) were proud people recently at the Statler Hilton Hotel, N Y . John was made "Gael of the Year" at this 75th annual Ball of the United Irish Counties. Many Galway people were on hand to cheer John who has done so much for the Irish coming to New York during the past twenty years. Galway folk present were J o h n Carroll (Corofin) Chairman of the U.C. Feis Committee, his wife Mary; Kevin Morrissey (Tuam); John Concannon (Tuam); the Cahalans (Galway); Helen Cribben (Tuam); Dan Daly (Galway); Rosaleen Fitzgibbons (Ahascragh); Mary Fallon (Oughterard); Br. David Concannon (Tuam); Martin Forde (Athenry); Br. Eddie Gray (Clifden and Phila delphia); John Keane (Maam); Pat O'Neill (Gort); Bill Hanley (Galway); Thomas Fahey (Casdegar); Jimmy Brennan (Salthill). Also present were Mr. and Mrs. Garoid O Clearig, Consul General, N.Y.; M a n Higgins (Donegal); Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Fitzpatrick (Swinford). Tom Duggan (Cavan) was chairman of the affair. Paul O'Dwyer was also present. The grand march through the ballroom was led by John O'Connor, his wife Mary, and Mike Keane, President U.I.C. .Noel K i n g s t o n ' s B a n d ' supplied the music and Dorothy Hayden was the popular M.C. It W a s Joyous This past Wednesday we had 112 tow trucks belong ing to the agency responsible for towing away illegally parked cars from the streets of New York put out of commission by a youth. His car was towed away whjle parked legally. He got into the pound where the tow trucks were parked and slashed all the tyres! However, Michael Michaels was escorted to the police station by one of New York's best lawyers and the charge was reduced to a misdemeanour. The irony of all this speaks for itself: the truck drivers are supposed to get $11 for every car they tow away--illegally or legally-- and it is known most towed vehicles are removed from legally parked areas. Death Death took place suddenly this Saturday of Ernie Gaze, well known to many in Galway where he visited often. Ernie's wife Lil was with Ernie when he had his fatal heart attack. He was s u p e r i n t e n d e n t of this apartment building at 90-11 35 Avenue--yes, my place. Willy Fahy

BRIDGE GETTING NEARER
" T h e solution to Galway's traffic problem lies largely in the construction of a new route north of the city which will include a crossing of the Corrib," stated Mr. Robert Molloy T.D. when referring to the findings of the Galway Transportation Study, speaking in the city last week. He pointed out that the main priority is the con struction of the new Corrib bridge and its approaches linking Sean Mulvoy Road to Seamus Quirke Road. Already the Minister for the Environment has agreed to the appointment of consultants for the pro posed new bridge. Galway Corporation has applied to ohe Minister for a Bridge Order and they have been asked to submit a report on their proposal. When the report is received the application will be reviewed in closer detail.
