NO POPE HERE?
T h a t the elevation o f T o m a s O Fiaich to the rank o f Cardinal within the Catholic C h u r c h was one o f the great m o m e n t s in the recent history o f Irish C h r i s t i a n i t y c a n b e t a k e n as r e a d . H i s t y p i c a l l y h u m a n e b e h a v i o u r , his s e n s i t i v e gestures o f g o o d will to all Irish people a n d his w a r m w e l c o m e o n his return to this country were a source o f joy and consolation w h i c h will long remain in the memories of those w h o witnessed them. B u t it w o u l d b e w r o n g t o s u g g e s t t h a t t h e r e w a s n o t s o m e I r i s h d i s a p p o i n t m e n t w i t h R o m e a n d w i t h the g r o w i n g likelihood with each passing d a y that the high h o p e s o f a P a p a l v i s i t t o K n o c k i n A u g u s t is b e i n g r u l e d o u t . C a r d i n a l O F i a i c h , w h o u s e d to feel confident that H i s Holiness w o u l d c o m e for this 100th anniversary o f our national M a r i a n shrine, indicated before he w e n t to R o m e that w e w o u l d h a v e definite w o r d w i t h i n the w e e k . T h a t w e e k has passed a n d w h i l e the C a r d i n a l A r c h b i s h o p o f A r m a g h says he does not rule o u t a P a p a l visit to Ireland within the next year or t w o he seems to b e hinting in the nicest possible w a y that as f a r a s t h e K n o c k c e n t e n a r y is c o n c e r n e d , it is g o i n g t o b e a c a s e o f n o P o p e h e r e in M a y o in A u g u s t . T h e H o l y F a t h e r has p u b l i c l y stated he wishes to visit Ireland. H e has p u b l i c l y a c k n o w l e d g e d the d e b t o f gratitude w h i c h the C a t h o l i c C h u r c h t h r o u g h o u t the w o r l d o w e s t h e I r i s h a n d h a s i n d i c a t e d t h a t t h i s r e a l i t y is f u l l y a p p r e c i a t e d i n t h e Vatican. W h y then the hesitance about K n o c k ? W e d o not accept the suggestion t h a t R o m e is n o l o n g e r i n t e r e s t e d i n M a r i a n s h r i n e s o r i n t h e p r o m o t i o n o f d e v o t i o n to the m o t h e r o f G o d . P a p a l e m p h a s i s d u r i n g his recent trip b a c k h o m e t o P o l a n d belies s u c h s u g g e s t i o n s . T h e I r i s h trip, it is s u g g e s t e d b y m a n y o t h e r informed sources, will ultimately be decided b y the Vatican Secretariat o f State, a n d at this s t a g e o f t h e g a m e t h e y are u r g i n g c a u t i o n . I n b l u n t t e r m s , w e are dealing w i t h d i p l o m a t i c nicieties as w e l l as religious considerations. T h e P o p e cannot c o m e to Ireland w i t h o u t going to A r m a g h -- c a p i t a l o f the 32-county Irish ecclesiastical S e e -- b u t in terms o f V a t i c a n d i p l o m a c y , this w o u l d not be advised without the consent a n d active co-operation o f the British authorities in the North. S u c h thinking ignores the fact that A r m a g h was the capital o f the Irish C h u r c h for s e v e r a l c e n t u r i e s , e v e r b e f o r e p a r t i t i o n c o m p l i c a t e d m a t t e r s a m e r e 60 y e a r s ago. It also s e e m s t o s u g g e s t that w h i l e the V a t i c a n c a n negotiate w i t h the C o m m u n i s t r e g i m e in P o l a n d o n all the c o m p l i c a t e d and delicate matters connected with the recent trip back h o m e b y His Holiness, Her Majesty's G o v e r n m e n t in L o n d o n c a n , indirectly at least, e x e r c i s e a v e t o o n a trip b y t h e P o p e to Ireland w h i c h the people here w a n t and w h i c h the H o l y Father himself has indicated he wants to make. T h i s has n o t h i n g to d o w i t h religion, w i t h official C h u r c h attitudes to K n o c k , or the theological reservations o f D r . Paisley and other Northern Irishmen to Papal v i s i t s . I t is a s i m p l e m a t t e r o f d i p l o m a c y , l i k e t h e a r r a n g e m e n t f o r t h e P o l i s h t r i p was, a n d in w h i c h the D u b l i n G o v e r n m e n t m a y have s o m e part to play. F o r h o w can V a t i c a n d i p l o m a t s insist o n their h e a d o f state's right to visit w h a t e v e r parts o f I r e l a n d h e w i s h e s , if this is n o t o p e n l y s u p p o r t e d b y the international v o i c e s o f o n e o f t h e m o s t l o y a l C a t h o l i c c o m m u n i t i e s i n t h e w o r l d ? N o r is it e x c l u s i v e l y a m a t t e r for t h e D u b l i n G o v e r n m e n t . I r i s h C a t h o l i c v o i c e s a t h o m e a n d a b r o a d a n d a l l r e a s o n a b l e I r i s h v o i c e s o f w h a t e v e r p e r s u a s i o n s h o u l d l e t it b e k n o w n c l e a r l y a n d l o u d l y n o t o n l y t h a t H i s H o l i n e s s is w e l c o m e i n t h i s c o u n t r y b u t t h a t t h e y e x p e c t h i m to take u p the invitation to be present w h e n the nation celebrates the 100th anniversary o f K n o c k .

N o t e v e r y o n e in the C i t y c a n o r does s p e n d their time h e l p i n g others. T o d o so, o f c o u r s e , w o u l d b e the C h r i s t i a n ideal. B u t the facts o f o u r b u s y a n d c o m p l e x w o r l d are that m o r e a n d m o r e o f o u r energies are b e i n g e x h a u s t e d not in the p u r s u i t o f riches b u t m e r e l y in the n o r m a l goals o f life, w o r k a n d s u r v i v a l . A n d h o p e f u l l y as w e r u s h b y w e m a y g i v e a l i t t l e h e l p h e r e a n d t h e r e . I n e v i t a b l y p e o p l e g e t l e f t o u t . A s t h e C i t y e x p a n d s a n d life b e c o m e s m o r e intricate t h e n u m b e r s t h a t suffer invariably increases. N o - o n e w a n t s to believe that there are o l d , n e g l e c t e d a n d lonely p e o p l e living in this t o w n -- b u t there are. Before the e s t a b l i s h m e n t o f the Samaritans in G a l w a y m a n y people b e l i e v e d there was n o n e e d for t h e m . Y e t e v e r y w e e k t h e y receive h u n d r e d s o f calls. T h e f a c t s s p e a k f o r t h e m s e l v e s . A t p r e s e n t t h e r e a r e a b o u t 2,000 v o l u n t e e r s w o r k i n g in the large n u m b e r o f ' H e l p ' associations here. T h e n e w C e n t r e at St. F r a n c i s Street will also act as a necessary c o - o r d i n a t i n g office w h i c h will n o t o n l y e n s u r e the most efficient action b u t in most cases will b e m e r e l y p o i n t i n g out people's entitlements and not handing out charity. Aside from the friendly but energetic prodding from B i s h o p E a m o n Casey, and the hard w o r k o f m a n a g e m e n t committee, the traditional "faceless b u r e a u c r a t s " o f s u c h b o d i e s as t h e W e s t e r n H e a l t h B o a r d a n d t h e l o c a l a u t h o r i t i e s e m e r g e w i t h v e r y h u m a n e faces indeed. I n fact o n e o f the few benefits o f a c h a n g i n g society appears to be that g o v e r n m e n t , religion and authority are c o m i n g d o w n to the p e o p l e . P e r h a p s G a l w a y is j u s t l u c k y i n i t s e x c e l l e n t o f f i c i a l s . T h e s p i r i t o f w o r k i n g together for a c o m m o n a i m n o t only forges a m o r e h e a l t h y a n d p r o g r e s s i v e c o m munity b u t creates real p r i d e in w o r k well d o n e . F e w better e x a m p l e s o f this co-operation exist than this attractive n e w C e n t r e w h i c h not only represents a major d e v e l o p m e n t in social services but s h o w s what can be d o n e b y across the board co-operation.
