Procession


The Bishop of Galway Most Rev. Dr. Eamon Casey holding the Blessed Sacrament during the Corpus Christi procession from Galway Cathedral to Eyre Square on Sunday. The Order of Malta were in charge of the stewarding of the procession which included the Mayor and members of the Borough Council in full ceremonial robes, religious organisations and St. Patrick's Brass Band.

Deep Sea Fishing I went on the season's first fishing trip out of Freeport, Long Island, with the E m e r a l d Societies Transit Group last week. Forty of us went on the beautiful boat Blue Finn with a most courteous and capable crew. The catch was small, about 50 fluke and 40 sole. However, the fresh air was good and the warm sunshine made it all worth while. With me on this trip were Pat Hunt (Sligo), Ed Cusack (Charlestown), Jack Geraghty (Galway), Martin Ruane (Bohola), Willie Prendergast (Claremorris), Pat Conneely (Cammore, Galway), Kieran Curran (Glen Columcille), Pat Shea (Kerry), Jack Kearney (Ennis) and Buck Butler (Dublin) and Tommy Con neely son of Paddy, was on his first fishing trip. R e t u r n to C a s t l e b a r Pat Jennings of the Travellers Friend Hotel, Castlebar and Henry McGlade, also of Castlebar returned to Ireland this Saturday after a promo tional tour for the Castlebar Song Festival. The two handsome Mayomen visited Las ^ e g a s , California, Chicago, Tennessee (Grand 'Old Opera') and New York. The song festival has grown in popularity and the boys appeared on radio and television in many cities. Sponsors Allied Irish Banks VicePresident Finbar Hazel has announced that the bank will sponsor this year's United Irish Counties Feis at Dunwoodie this June. In the meantime Bill Burke, Vice-President of the Bank of Ireland Group in N.Y., was elected to the G.A.A. Committees of the senior and minor Boards of New York. Bill Burke announced that his bank will sponsor some games at Gaelic Park this season. Jackie Salmon of Clifden, Co. Galway is Chairman for the second year of the New York G.A.A. Left for Foxford Breege Ward of Ward Travel, Elmhurst left for a holiday in her native Foxford, Co. Mayo. She is wife of Brendan Ward, also of Foxford. Touring the U.S. Peter McDonough of the Galway Society of London is at present visiting the U.S. A native of Galway City, Peter and his wife will visit Chicago, Las Vegas, California, New York's Brooklyn, Woodside, Sunnyside and Manhattan. " S a y s It's Not S o " A group here in Jackson Heights are trying to put down the morbid and criminal stories of Jackson Heights and its low respect for the laws and people's property. I know this neighbourhood's reputation is at a low ebb in crime and not without reason. But this new group wants to coun teract police reports and newspaper accounts of illegal aliens and drug activity. They want to vitalise efforts to clear our bad name. One wonders if this

isn't another gimmick to push the awful goings on in Jackson Heights behind a curtain of disguise. For instance on Friday night last 15 people called to complain about the noise at 4 a.m. (started at midnight) to the police. I called 3 times

myself but the police told me they had only one car in the area and it was unable to come. The blaring hi-fi eventually stopped at 7 a.m.! Willy Fahy
