M u l d o o n was a national teacher in K i n v a r r a parish for 44 years a n d his family, relatives, g r a n d children a n d friends held a d i n n e r at F l a n n e r y ' s Hotel for t h e occasion. T h e presentation was m a d e on behalf of his g r a n d c h i l d r e n .

"HATCHET" BY H E N O M A G E E Hatchet, t h e controversial Dublin play, will b e staged in Galway for t w o n i g h t s this coming weekend. T h e Arts Society in U . C . G . have a r ranged a transfer of t h e v e r y successful E m b a n k m e n t p r o duction a n d it will b e shown on S a t u r d a y 13th a n d S u n d a y 14th in t h e Jesuit H a l l , Sea Road. Hatchet was first p e r f o r m e d in t h e A b b e y T h e a t r e in 1972 when Lelia Doolin was Artistic Dir ector. A c o n t e m porary play a b o u t working class D u b l i n , it m e t w i t h great success a n d critical acclaim. L a t e r t h a t year R T E filmed t h e play for its d r a m a series. T h e p r e s e n t p r o d u c t i o n is directed b y E a m o n D r a p e r and h a s a full professional production t h a t includes J i m Bartley, Colette Proctor, Vin cent S m i t h , B r e n d a D o y l e , T o m I r w i n a n d Virginia C o l e . Jim Bartley, w h o plays Hatchet Bailey is n o stranger t o G a l w a y , being a regular visitor w i t h t h e Irish T h e a t r e C o m p a n y . Vincent S m i t h is one of m a n y television actors in t h e p r o d u c t i o n . H e is better k n o w n as ' M u r p h ' in 'The Riordans.' Hatchet is a play a b o u t violence, a b o u t fists, knives, and even hatchets. I t ' s h e r o , H a t c h e t Bailey, tries in vain to escape from t h e tradition of violence t h a t s u r r o u n d s h i m . I n m a n y ways t h e a u t h o r H e n o M a g e e can b e c o m p a r e d to O'Casey. H e faithfully recaptures t h e language a n d feeling of working class D u b lin a n d his h e r o H a t c h e t Bailey is ultimately a tragic figure.

SCHOOLS DEBATING T h e National Inter Schools D e b a t i n g Competition spon sored b y t h e Educational Building Society has n o w reached, t h e final stages for t h e Galway area. T h e first semi-final b e tween t h e Vocational School, F r . Griffin Road a n d Salerno School saw Salerno coming o u t on t o p . T h e ' s e c o n d semi-final took place in t h e Jesuit Hall, Sea R o a d , yesterday between S t . Ignatius School and St. P a u l s , O u g h t e r a r d , t h e win n e r s m e e t Salerno in t h e final which takes place on W e d nesday 17th D e c e m b e r , venue to b e decided. T h e overall standard was exceptionally high, p a r t i c u larly as t h e debates p r o gressed. T h e organisation is being provided by t h e G a l way Junior C h a m b e r w h o are i n d e b t e d to t h e various adjudicators for their time given a n d indeed their c o n structive criticism which in n o small way helped t h e contestants to improve their overall s t a n d a r d . T h e Regional finals will take place early in t h e n e w year culminating with t h e final in D u b l i n .
