PLEA FOR MORE ' PARENT TEACHER MEETINGS T h e n e w role of t h e p a r e n t a n d the school was discussed at a Public M e e t i n g sponsored b y t h e Salthill a n d District Parent's Association in t h e Warwick H o t e l , last week. T h e meeting was addressed by M r . J o h n Fitzgibbon a n d M r s . Kathleen Quigley of t h e P a r e n t School M o v e m e n t . D u b l i n . M r . Fitzgibbon o u t lined h o w recent research h a d further proved that t h e p a r e n t s ' influence, particularly that of the m o t h e r , is t h e d o m i n a n t o n e in t h e develop m e n t of a child. H e believed that:-- 1. I t was necessary for parents a n d teachers to work as a team in t h e education of children. 2. T h e school in a c o m m u n i t y was the natural place where parents could o b t a i n t h e information a n d further education so necessary in t o day's changing world. M r s . Quigley saw p a r e n t s as t h e natural ally of t h e teacher a n d indeed of m a n agement--in helping to solve t h e m a n y problems affecting schools today. If parents were kept informed of such decis ions as a recent o n e t o m a k e no further a p p o i n t m e n t s of remedial teachers in P r i m a r y Schools or the failure to i m prove t h e present u p p e r limit 45 in primary school, classes, etc., she felt t h e y would fight to improve matters. N o w that parents were t o b e i n volved in m a n a g e m e n t , it was imperative that some s t r u c ture should b e set u p in every school which would e n s u r e regular meetings which would , enable parents to get to k n o w .each other, a n d act as a f o r u m for information.
