SPOTLIGHT ON SPORT
the British Antartic Expedi tion advance party radioed the following message to his headquarters--"Summer has come to the Antartic anst with it the golfing season. Our two carpenters brought their clubs with them and now they spend much of their spare time driving, chipping and putting in the area around the huts". The only progressive com bination that can work out for the scoring in 18 holes of golf is three threes, four fours, five fives and six sixes, to give a gross total of 86. You'd want to be playing off a long handi cap to win a net prize with that score but if you eve, do it in a competition, I'm quite sure you would get your name into the Guinness Book of Records! Probably one of the most remarkable scores ever re corded in golf was the nine successive threes of a R. H. Curbett playing in a cup semi final in 1916. The bogey-- at it was called at the time-- was 35. Mr. Corbctt had 2 eagles, 4 birdies and three pars. Members of the family of Grace, who are lawyers in St. Andrews, have maintained an unbroken family associa tion of 170 years with the Royal and Ancient as either club secretary, treasurer or secretary to the Greens Com mittee. RI.3 We recommend that in any unit area, where the parish rule operates, there should be only one parent G.A.A. Club, with all its adult hurling and football teams and under-age teams attached. R1.4 In order to keep abreast of modern methods of admin istration and also to ensure a closer liaison with one an other and with the Coiste Contac, we recommend that a meeting of all Club Secre taries be convened on at least a half-yearly basis by the Coiste Contae. RI.5 We have noted in 1.14 the great need for club sup porters to ccme forward and undertake the responsibility of efficcrship and participate in corrmiltee work. We reecrrmend that clubs should welcome and encourage the involvement of lady support ers in these areas. RI.6 We rcccrr.mcnd that all club officers should carefully study the pertient sections on club censititution, struc ture and rranagiment AS out lined in the Report of the Ccrrmissicn on the G.A.A., published by C.L.G. in 1971, and now available in booklet fcim, rr.d (hat clubs should adhere to il esc recirrmi NEGA tions as they frid practicable.

The annual Old Folks Party will be held in the Clubhouse on Monday next, January 20th. Donations tow ards the expenses to be in curred will be gratefully re ceived by any member of the organising committee. Any person willing to provide transport to bring the old folk to an from their homes should also contact the com mittee. The party will run from I to 8 p.m. The Annual Dress Dance will be held in the Clubhouse on Saturday, February 8th. Make a note of the date and remember that tickets will be strictly limited. Full partic ulars later. The new steward--John Murray--and his wife have now taken up duty and here's wishing them both well. John has already arranged to start Sunday luetics on Sunday week, January 26th. They will be available from t.OO to 2.30 p.m., but only to those who have booked for them by noon on the previous day. Did you know that--Golf Was played in Tibet at a height of I.MOO feet in 1904.

SAYS

Last week I promised to comment on the Report of the Commission of the Gal way G.A.A. recently released. Let's take the recommendaations piecemeal. Their first recommendations concerns T h e Club and are:-- Recommendations. Rl.l In their own interest, we recommend that clubs should foster and encouragehome talent, rather than place an over-dependence on the return of semi-exiled players on odd occasions to fulfil match fixtures. RI.2 In the case of a club, where limitations in the mat ter of resources, of man power, grounds and other amenities severely hinder or even prevent its fulfilment of fixtures, and also limit its range of social activities for its members, we recommend that it should seek the assist ance of the Development Committee of the County Committee.

All these recorrmendations are very good. What they suggest is that G.A.A. men should get involved in the G.A.A. Club of the area in which they reside and that the parish unit be preserved in urban as well as rural areas. Next week we will look at the reccrr.mendations regard ing competitions. One other thing: encouragement is given to clubs for more involvement of lady supporters. Every club worth its salt should now have ladies involved n seme way. There are so many now have ladies involved in some way. There are so many areas in which an active par ticipation by lady supporters can be a boon to a club. I will return to this topic at a later date. READER WRITES A reader with a Taylor's Hill address has written to me to compliment the G.A.A. for their great Connacht S.F. final programme of last Sum mer and the fine programme for the Galway v. Mayo game here last November. He takes the Galway F.Board to task though for not preparing an official programme every year for its Co. S.F. final. Point taken reader. At the F. Board Convention in Bal linasloe, Paul O'Grady of Tuam proposed that the Board establish a Public Re lations Committee. This is an area in which this Com mittee, when appointed, might get involved.

SALTHILL G.A.A. The Salthill G.A.A. Club starts a 7-a-side parish league in Galic football on Sunday next with 4 games. (1) Minors v. Over 30's (Prairie) 2 p.m. and (2) B.T.E. V . St. Kieran's (do.) 3 p.m. Referee for 1 & 2 G. Murray. (3) The Brothers v. Away Students (St. Joseph'6) 2 p.m. and (4) Garda v. Salt hill Students (do.) 3 p.m. Referee for 3 & 4 F. Morrin. Each game 20 minutes per half. The league will con tinue every Sunday until March 2nd (inclusive). LIAM SAMMON Last Saturday morning I visited Pearse Stadium at 11 a.m. It was a bitterly cold morning. Yet there he was a? he is to be seen every Sat urday morning hail rain or snow with about 50 young boys frcm 8 years to 12 years A number of games were in progress and there was great activity. I refer to Liam Simmon and I say well done and thanks to a dedicated player who takes the time to impart his skills to youngsters at a time when he means so much to them. My own 9 years old son wouldn't mis? one of these sessions for anything. NEW G.A.A. DIARY Thank God for Muiris de Prionnbheol. Since he was seconded to the G.A.A. from the National Savings Com mittee he has made things tick. First it was the G.A.A. shop in Croke Park among other things. Now he has produced a new G.A.A. Diary for 1975. The diary contains Clar na gCluiche for 1975. One date to note. The AllIreland finals of Scor '75 take place on Saturday, April 5th in Leisureland, Salthill. Tnis is one night that this large Complex will be filled to capacity. I have been to the Scor final once before in the main R.D.S. Auditorium in Ballsbridge. It was a tremendously Irish night. Njte the date April 5th. The

C 3 N N A C H T finals of Scor '75 are being held in Leisureland also. More anon. To return to the diary. It is not an over-ambitious effort. It is purely an adapt ation of a stock diary but it is the first attempt at a G.A.A, diary and is great value for 35p. Anybody interested in getting a copy is asked to write to the following address enclosing 35p to cover cost and postage: G.A.A. Diary, c/o P. S. O Ceallanain, Craughwell, Co. Galway.

MAYO G.A.A. YEARBOOK There are many great Mayo people in Galway. Johnny Buckley, Fr. Leo, Joe Lally, Patsy Griffin, Mick Connaughton, Dan O'Neill, Tom Deavy, Simon Kelly, Donal Downes, Sean Heneghan, Tommy Stephens, just to name a few. Weill there's a 1975 edition of the Mayo G.A.A. Yearbook avail able and it is first class. Costing 40p it has two ex cellent articles by J. P. Kean and Sean Flanagan. J.P.'sl piece is the best I have read from a player for many years. Great stuff and should be read by every schoolboy in Mayo or Galway. This An nual is of interest to Galwayj people too. If you write to Sean Rice, Editor, Linenhall Street, Castlebar, and enclose; a P.O. for 50 p. (incl. postage) you wont be disappointed.! Till next week le congnamh De.
