ARCHERY IN GALWAY
Another dimension was a d d e d to t h e recreational p o s sibilities of t h e city w i t h t h e f o r m a t i o n i n O c t o b e r 1973 of the Galway Archers. T h e c l u b w o u n d u p its activities for 1973 w i t h a n colourful a n d keenly contested h a n d i cap competition based o n t h e Portsmouth Round. Attrac tive a n d festive p r i z e s w e r e awarded to the winner John Eaton and to the runners-up Aidan O'Toole a n d Pat Naughton.

Gilooly's "alternatives as h e w i s h e d t o call a n y of h i s substitute panel, are merely s u b s after all! Still t h e r e is n o p o i n t in r u b b i n g it i n . Offaly, like e v e r y b o d y else, o u r s e l v e s i n c l u d e d , h a v e g o t t o live w i t h defeat as well as s u c c e s s . U . C . G . lost t h e S i g e r s o n C u p final t o U . C . D . o n t h e s c o r e 0 - 1 3 t o 1-5. T h e i r h a r d game against Q u e e n ' s in t h e semi-final d i d n ' t h e l p t h e m . T h e early c l u b shoots w e r e conducted at a n open air v e n u e at D a i n g e a n b u t b l u s tery winds, mist a n d rain squalls soon sent even t h e most ardent toxophilites scurrying to Winter quarters, first at t h e O l d G r a m m a r S c h o o l a n d later o n t o t h e i r p r e s e n t h e a d q u a r t e r s at M e r v u e w h e r e t h e t w a n g of b o w s t r i n g a n d t h e " s w o o s h " of a r r o w towards t h e target boss a r e n o w familiar m u s i c o n M o n d a y and T h u r s d a y nights at 8 p . m . Y o u c a n see as sophisticated a r a n g e of tackle o n display o n t h o s e n i g h t s as is t o b e f o u n d anywhere in the country w h i c h boasts of at least a half d o z e n c l u b s , t w o b e i n g in D u b l i n , o n e i n C o r k a n d one in Galway. Any interested persons m i g h t learn m o r e of t h e s p o r t of a c h e r y b y e i t h e r c o n t a c t i n g t h e a r c h e r s at M e r v u e o r alternatively b y w r i t i n g t o the Hon. Intending members ought n o t invest in n e w tackle b e f o r e first c o n s u l t i n g c l u b m e m b e r s through t h e Secretary a n d t h e y will gladly a d v i s e as t o equipment best suited t o t h e aspirants needs a n d leanings.
