Large Attendance at Outspoken Exhibition
T h e Irish Conservation Society's exhibition entitled ' W o r l d P o p u l a t i o n Year 1974 W h a t is t h e f u t u r e for I r e l a n d ' s C h i l d r e n ? " is p r e s e n t ed with o n e o u t s t a n d i n g o b jective; to explain w h y t h e r e a w o r l d r e s o u r c e crisis setting in. T h e aim is to i n form p u b l i c o p i n i o n r a t h e r t h a n to p r o v i d e cut a n d d r i e d answers to t h e problems facing u s . D u r i n g t h e first t h r e e days of t h e exhibition o p e n i n g a t U n i v e r s i t y College, G a l w a y , m o r e t h a n 1,200 p e o p l e c a m e to sec it. T h e exhibition begins with a look at t h e origins of t h e p r e s e n t situation w h i c h b e g a n as far back as t h e s t o n e age w i t h p r i m i t i v e shifting agri c u l t u r e . P e r s i s t e n t r e m o v a l of t h e vegetation by o v e r g r a z i n g and cutting has, over the c e n t u r i e s , resulted in t h e d e n u d a t i o n of large areas of t h e w o r l d , for e x a m p l e t h e M e d i t e r r a n e a n , a n d has p r o b a b l y aided t h e s p r e a d of d e s e r t s . T h e s e c o n d , a n d largest section, deals w i t h t h e p r e s ent. T h e rapid growth in p o p u l a t i o n , central t o t h e o t h e r p r o b l e m s e x a m i n e d , is d e m o n s t r a t e d . I t is s h o w n that t h e p o p u l a t i o n is increas ing m u c h faster t h a n food p r o d u c t i o n w h i c h is limited b y t h e a m o u n t of s u i t a b l e land available. D e s p i t e t h e " g r e e n r e v o l u t i o n " increases in food s u p p l y in t h e n e x t few years will n o t feed t h e p r e s e n t p o p u l a t i o n , let a l o n e t h e p o p u l a t i o n e x p e c t e d in say, t h e n e x t five or ten years T h e reasons for t h i s a r e n u m e r o u s : -- T h e r e is p r a c tically n o m o r e l a n d left to b e b r o u g h t i n t o cultivation ( t h e extensive tropical forests are n o t suitable for c u l t i v a t i o n ) ; increased yields w h i c h h a v e r e s u l t e d from t h e "green r e v o l u t i o n " will n o t b e sus tained because t h e soil is b e i n g e x h a u s t e d , while pests a n d diseases will evolve t o attack t h e p r e s e n t r e s i s t a n t strains. T h e large a m o u n t s of fertiliser r e q u i r e d to p r o d u c e h i g h yields c a n o n l y be obtained by using enormous a m o u n t s of o u r n o w failing supplies of energy. O t h e r sections deal w i t h the question of Ireland's ability t o feed itself, t h e scarcity of oil s u p p l i e s , a n d t h e possible d a n g e r of a break d o w n in u r b a n life w i t h widespread pollution, u n e m p l o y m e n t , famine a n d t h e c o m p l e t e collapse of social order. I t was u n a n i m o u s l y agreed that a specia s u b - c o m m i t t e e t a k e u p thi m a t t e r with t h e school a u t h orities a n d avoid furthe h a r d s h i p to c h i l d r e n in thi r a p i d l y - g r o w i n g area. M e m b e r s of t h e G a l w a y Blazers r i d i n g to h u n t last S u n d a y at G r e e n h o u s e were confronted b y almost forty m e m b e r s of t h e I r i s h C o u n c i l against Blood S p o r t s . Students seek Employment
The "Commerce and Economics" students of U . C . G . last week f o r m e d an action g r o u p -- " C o m m c a r ' 7 4 " -- t o investigate e m p l o y m e n t o p p o r t u n i t i e s for g r a d uates. A t t h e i r inaugural m e e t i n g t h e g r o u p formed a c o m m i t t e e under the chairman, Ken R o g a n , a final year c o m m e r c e student. Initially, t h e intention is to invite industrialists a n d b u s i n e s s m e n from t h e G a l w a y area to t h e college c a m p u s to meet the students and to b r i n g a b o u t a closer i n t e r action between b o t h parties in t h e f u t u r e . T h e g r o u p will b e w o r k i n g in co-operation with the Industrial Liaison Officer, M r . Michael Moroney, and t h e Careers Officer, Mr. Peter Keane.
