T h e final w e e k o f t h i s year's C o m m u n i t y G a m e s began last Sunday when approximately 2 , 0 0 0 child r e n f r o m all over County Galway paraded from the Spanish Arch to Kennedy Park, Eyre Square. The parade was led by a colour party of Boy Scouts and the St. Patrick's B o y s School Band, directed by Johnny Cox. All of the areas looked resplendent in their local c o m m u n i t y colours and e m b l e m s . Shortly after the parade started at 3 p . m . the s y m b o l i c t o r c h w a s lit at Renmore Barracks by Mr. Gary Hartman of the Galway Shopping Centre w h o are the sponsors of this year's G a m e s . The torch was carried by a relay of runners f r o m m a n y of the competing a r e a s a n d it a r r i v e d at E y r e S q u a r e just as t h e p a r a d e a s s e m b l e d to light the B o w l of Light which is one of the symbols of the Community Games. The honour of lighting the b o w l w a s given to M i c h a e l Tierney w h o last year w o n a gold m e d a l at the nati onal finals representing Newcastle area in Table Tennis. The Games Pledge was read by young Maria M c Geogh from Oughterard, a n d it w a s a v e r y m o v i n g o c c a s i o n to h e a r all the c h i l d r e n r e p e a t i n g it a f t e r her. Then Mr. C l e m D e s m o n d , Chairman of the G a m e s , welcomed the dis tinguished guests which included Aid. F. C o o g a n , Mayor of Galway; Most Rev. Dr. Browne, Bishop

of Galway, Archdeacon Harris, Monsignor Glynn and the c o m m i t t e e of the Shopping Centre who were thanked for their generous contribution as sponsors. The National Anthem was played by the band and the Games were officially opened by the Mayor. Aid Coogan praised the organisers, parents and all the children for their wonderful display and numbers. He reminded t h e m of their pledge which includes the words: "Not victory at any cost." M o s t Rev. Dr. Browne compli m e n t e d the work being done through the C o m munity Games which in volved young people in a healthy pastime. Mr. D a n O'Neill, Ireland West T o u r i s m was also loud in his praise of the colourful display the children presented in re presenting their areas and when Mrs. Mary Bennett announced that the Ireland West Trophy for the out standing area in the parade was won by Ballygar the announcement was greeted with loud cheers. This was an award truly merited as Ballygar delighted the large crowds of spectators with their own band, dress and dis cipline during the parade through the town. to lose but Mervue, the holders, at least h a d the satisfaction of having the b e s t p l a y e r o n t h e field i n Ray O'Flaherty whoscored two excellent goals. The remainder of the finals are b e i n g played this week and w h e n the G a m e s finally e n d n e x t Sunday 5 3 7 children will have received either gold, silver or bronze m e d a l s . When the 1 9 7 4 Games started in M a y at local level, and in June at county level over 7 , 5 0 0 children participated at s o m e stage.

Tonight at Leisureland, starting 6 . 3 0 p.m. over 5 0 0 y o u n g people will c o m p e t e in s w i m m i n g and on S u n d a y o v e r 1 , 1 0 0 will c o m pete in athletics. Because o f the huge athletics p r o gramme the organising Committee have decided to hold the relays in the Headford Road Grounds of the Patrician Brothers, a s far a s the finals at 4 p.m. T h e total entry of 4 2 areas has far exceeded the Committee's expectations. Only three years in exist ence, the whole idea of the Community Games has caught the imagination of young people. Last year there were 1 0 6 t e a m s c o m peting from 2 6 areas. This year there were 1 8 1 teams from 4 2 areas and the Committee are particul arly pleased that so m a n y areas from the county are taking part. T h e C o m m unity Games not only symbolise the involve ment of youth but also the involvement of parents to take a greater interest in the young people of their own area.
