Hearing date Galway stylist to compete in finals set for assault accused
BY MARTINA NEE A hearing date has been set for the man who is accused of assaulting two gardai, a woman and a juvenile. Gerard Barry, previously of Rosan Glas, Rahoon, and who is currently serving sentences for other matters, was brought in custody before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court yesterday. The 29-year-old is facing charges of being intoxicated in a public place and breaching the peace by engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at Eyre Square on March 31, 2007. Barry is also charged with the alleged assault of Garda Jason Kelly and Sgt John McElroy and with failure to comply with Garda orders, and obstruction on the same date. There are also charges of assaulting a woman and a young boy at a house in Claremont Park on August 3, 2007. Then on August 16, 2007, it is alleged that Barry contravened a protection order by calling to the house of the same woman in Clareview Park at 2.25am and putting her in fear. Inspector Sean Glynn told the court that the DPP had directed the matter be dealt with summarily. He added there would be seven State witnesses in the case. Defence solicitor Olivia Traynor applied for a date to be set for a hearing. The court heard that although the defendant was currently in custody for other matters, he had been granted bail for these charges. Judge Fahy remanded Barry on continuing bail to appear at Galway District Court again on November 18, 2009.

Debbie Claffey of Kulture Kurl, Abbeygate Street, Galway is a finalist in the Wella Trend Vision Colour Competition in the RDS Dublin on October5. Claffey is one of only 15 contestants to reach the final, and is the only participant from Galway.
