Portumna still on form
All Ireland champions Portumna maintained their efficient recent form when outwitting an improving Beagh on Sunday at Loughrea in the Galway Senior Hurling Championship. Ollie Canning returned from injury in a forward role, bagging a goal which supplemented majors from Joe Canning and Leo Smith as Portumna dealt comfortably with Beagh's enthusiasm. In the other Group B clash Athenry finally plundered a win as David Donoghue's seven-point haul ensured they survived against Turloughmore by 112 to 0-11. Aidan Poinard clipped an important opening period goal, and a struggling Turlough never fully recovered from that blow. In Group A Craughwell, who had suffered in earlier

encounters, gave a vastly improved display to defeat Gort. Inevitably Niall Healy was a key contributor, striking 11 points for Craughwell, who need a string of fortunate results in the coming weeks if they are to avoid a relegation scrap. Liam Mellows' adequate start to the year continued at Kenny Park on Saturday as the city outfit, prompted by Aonghus Callanan, beat Kiltormer, 2-15 to 1-12. The other Group C clash was packed with goals as Clarinbridge eventually prevailed with a 3-13 to 3-7 success over Kinvara. In Group D goals from Eoin Fitzgerald (2), Ronan O'Flynn, and Jason O'Gorman assisted Castlegar, who emerged 415 to 3-12 victors over Killimordaly, while Loughrea shaded a tight battle with Carnmore by 112 to 1-10. Johnny O'Loughlin was in prolific scoring form for Loughrea, hitting 1-7, and though Carnmore rallied late, enough damage had been inflicted.

Clarke's double clear Galway draw Kilkenny
Oranmore showjumper Olive Clarke took the major prize at the weekend's successful Claremorris Grand Prix Show. Clarke won the 1.5m Premier League Grand Prix with a stunning double clear on the Michael Duignan-owned Starboard. Clarke's victory came just a week after she finished fourth in Mullingar, having knocked the last fence in the opening round to miss the jump-off. However there were no such errors at the weekend as Clarke registered one of only three double clears in the fastest time, beating Tipperary's Trevor Breen in the process. Breen had won Saturday's opening round of the Connaught Grand Prix league and would have been favourite to do the double on either the same horse, Adventure de Kannan, or Always Cullohill, but in the end had to settle for second and fourth on the respective horses. Clarke also managed a fifth in the class with Butler's Pantry Spitfield, but it was Starboard that had the poise to get round clean and the pace to beat the other two clears. Starboard owner Michael Duignan said Clarke had done a superb job. "Starboard is a very popular horse at all the shows. He is as calm as you could possibly hope for and really loves the big arena with the watching crowds. Olive Clarke has done a superb job with him and she played a key part in the win." Ballinasloe's Damien Griffin, who finished second overall last year, came in a fine third on Lissy Egan Clover Diamond in the Connaught Grand Prix League. Headford Show Next Week The Connaught Grand Prix League will continue next weekend with action at the rearranged Headford Show on Saturday, kicking off a bumper weekend for riders as round three will quickly follow on Sunday at the Crossmolina show. The Headford show had been initially scheduled for last month but was cancelled due to some poor weather in the week leading up to the event. Hopes are high that Saturday's new date will still attract the big crowd especially with the main attraction of the 1.40 metre Grand Prix. The Galway Ladies Football u-14 team continue their campaign when they face Donegal on Saturday in Tubbercurry at 3pm. The squad is: Saoirse Burke (Clarinbridge);Niamh O'Connor (An Cheathru Rua); Sile Ni Shuilleabhain (Na Piarsaigh); Elaine Carey (Salthill/Knocknacarra); Kelley Malone (Naomh Mhuire); Aileen Crowley (Naomh Mhuire); Nicola Ward (Killkerrin/Clonberne, capt); Cora Creaven (Caherlistrane); Hayleigh Somers (Mountbellew/Moylough); Mairead Ni Loingsigh (Naomh Anna); Louise Ward (Killkerrin/Clonberne); Aislinn Newell (Claregalway); Anna Lane (Clarinbridge); Orla Kemple (Mountbellew/Moylough); Michelle Dunleavy (Claregalway); Roisin Ni Chonghaile (Maigh Cuilinn); Nicole Conway (Caltra); Sarah Gormally (Killkerrin/Clonberne); Dearbhla Fox (Mountbellew/Moylough); Ailbhe Finnerty Galway will face red hot championship favourites Kilkenny in the semi-final of the Leinster SHC. The game takes place in Tullamore on Saturday week. It will be the first time the two sides will meet in the provincial championship, and Galway manager John McIntyre acknowledges the task ahead. "Kilkenny have not been beaten in the championship for nearly four years, but hopefully we can play to our potential. It is a massive challenge for all associated with Galway hurling."

Dublin, who defeated Antrim last Sunday, will take on Wexford in the other semi-final in Nowlan Park. Unlike previous years, Galway will still be in the championship should they lose to the All-Ireland champions.
