Health and safety experts must assess Cashla power plant application says Grealish
BY KERNAN ANDREWS The Galway County Council must consult with health and safety experts to assess the potential risk to the public of a 200 megawatt power plant proposed for Cashla, Athenry. This is the view of Galway West TD Noel Grealish who believes the proposed gas powered plant is "totally unsuitable" for Cashla because of the large population in the area and its proximity to schools in Lisheenkyle, Carnmore, and Cregmore. As a result, Dep Grealish has called on both the planning and environment sections of the county council to consult with the HSE, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Health & Safety Authority before making a decision on the application. "There are many potential risks to public health, the environment, and livestock from a gas powered plant," he said. "I want to ensure all of these factors are fully explored before the county council make its decision."
An Taisce walk to school day a major success
New cinema mooted for Ballinasloe
Plans are under way to develop a four-screen cinema as part of a new commercial development in Ballinasloe town. Paddy Delaney has submitted a pre-validation planning application to the Galway County Council seeking permission for the cinema, which would seat approximately 600 people, along with four retail units, two office units, ESB substation, roads, car parking, signage, and associated works at a site in Dunlo townland. The development would also require the demolition of an agricultural shed on the site. A decision is due on the application by May 21.

a boreen to get to schools safely. Tiarnan McCusker, green schools travel education officer Galway city, says it was a privilege to see so many people taking part in the event. "The children loved it, the parents loved it and the benefits of this cannot be overstated. Not only are we trying to promote a new walking culture for the children and hence, healthier lifestyles, but we can play an active part in reducing congestion in Galway and help in the fight against climate change by reducing our CO2 emissions. Well done to everyone who took part in the `April Fool's Walk to School Day' you are an absolute credit to your schools!" After the initial two year pilot project in Dublin the Department of Transport has pledged up to 2 million yearly until 2012 for the An Taisce travel initiative.
