No shows to pay 2,000 price for no insurance
BY MARTINA NEE Two no shows were fined 2,000 each by a stern judge at Galway District Court this week for the offence of driving without insurance. Jose Santos with an address at Stone House, Crowe Street, Galway, and Laura Melling with an address at The Old Monastry, Letterfrack, Galway, were both summoned to appear before Judge Gerard Haughton for a string of road traffic offences, however, they failed to make an appearance in court. Santos had been summoned for driving without insurance, driving without a driving licence, having no tax and no NCT, and not having discs for both displayed. In his absence, Garda Oliver Whyte told the court that on May 26, 2008, at Carnmore gardai were called to the scene of a traffic accident where they spoke to the defendant. He added that Santos had no previous convictions. For driving without insurance, Judge Haughton imposed a fine of 2,000 with two months to pay. Santos' driving license was also endorsed and a two year disqualification was imposed. For each of the five other summons a fine of 300 was imposed. Melling had been summoned to appear at Galway District Court for driving without insurance and a driving licence. She was also summoned for failing to produce a driving licence at the scene, failure to produce a driving licence within 10 days, and failure to produce insurance. In the defendant's absence, Garda Gabriel Gormally told the court that on November 27, 2007, the defendant was found driving her vehicle at Killarainy, Moycullen, without insurance or a driving licence. For driving without insurance Judge Haughton fined her 2,000 with two months to pay, endorsed her particulars, and imposed a disqualification of two years. For each of the other four summons she was fined 300. Recognisance for both defendants was fixed at 300 with independent surety of 900.

We would like to express our sincere thank you for all of the well wishes we received following the recent burglary at our Shop and our Administration Offices. While it is very unfortunate that this robbery has taken place, the timing of it, so close to Christmas makes it even more difficult as people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness need our services even more so at this time of the year. We are currently providing accommodation to almost 100 men and women in houses throughout the City and over 1000 people have accessed our Day Centre on Seamus Quirke Road. We would be extremely grateful if members of the public or business in Galway would help us to turn this negative event into a more positive one by supporting our Christmas appeal, in anyway they can. To this end, we would like to acknowledge the generosity of Smyths Toys who have donated a voucher to fund the purchasing of toys for our Children's Christmas Party and to the couple, who wish to remain anonymous, who are kindly sponsoring the purchasing of turkeys for the Christmas dinners we provide in our houses. We would also appreciate it if anyone saw anything suspicious outside of our Shop or Offices on Bank Holiday Monday between 8pm and 9pm to report this to the Gardai at Mill Street.
