NUI, Galway seeks permission for high-tech School of Engineering
BY UNA SINNOTT NUI, Galway has applied for planning permission for an ultra-modern building to house the university's School of Engineering at its Upper Newcastle campus. The building, which is planned for a site just north of the Quincentennial Bridge in Upper Newcastle, will house the university's five engineering departments and will incorporate several new technologies which will also be used as teaching tools within the school. The 14,000sq metre facility will house the university's departments of civil, electronic, hydrology, industrial, and mechanical engineering. The facility is expected to cater for almost 1,000 undergraduate students and will provide extensive facilities for postgraduate education and research, with more than half the building comprising research laboratories. Several new technologies will be incorporated into the high-tech engineering campus, which will use its own utilities as a teaching tool. The building will be heated using an ecofriendly biomass boiler, a ground source heat pump, and a number of other green technologies will be incorporated into the school. Plans for the 61 million facility are currently before the Galway City Council, which is due to make a decision on the application by October 5. The university hopes to have completed the building by 2010. Meanwhile the Galway University Foundation is continuing in its fundraising for the School of Engineering. The Corrib Engineering Alumni Network was established last year to raise funds for the facility. Further information on the network and donations is available from Susan Treacy of Galway University Foundation, at (091) 495497, e-mail susan.treacy@nuigalway.ie

Gone in twenty seconds

Like a flash -- Paul Coffey, Colette and Noel Lally (cousins of Paul Hession), and Eileen McDonagh gathered in Dan's Bar, Athenry, to watch Paul Hession taking part in the semifinal of the men's 200m at the Beijing Olympics on Tuesday, but twenty seconds later it was all over and the disappointment on the face of Paul's fans was evident.
