GOING RACING

July 31 2008

Get a job at the races
BY MAGDALENA SZULC There is another way to be a part of the racing experience apart from attending the event as a guest, betting on horses, competing in best outfit contests, and enjoying fine food and drink. Working at the races not only allows you to earn a little extra income, but it also provides you with an opportunity to spend time in unusual surroundings and the exciting atmosphere of the festival. Taking a job at the races has another great advantage; it brings people close together. Whatever it is you do there, whether you're setting tables, polishing cutlery, waiting on the guests, or serving at the bar, you're guaranteed to meet a lot of interesting people from all over the world. With Galway being so cosmopolitan, it makes it so much easier to make friends with people of different backgrounds and different nationalities. The best time to apply for a job at the races is usually a few months before the event as there are always many people willing to work there. There are many jobs you can do during the races and you are bound to find something suitable for you. As it is only a very short-term job, it doesn't have to be related to your permanent profession. It's perfect for people spending a summer in Galway and looking for extra money. It also suits those in between jobs, perhaps slightly tight with money. A lot of workplaces, especially factories, close for business for the duration of the Galway Races. If you're off for this time, have no plans made and would like some extra cash, this is your answer! If you haven't applied for a job at one of the biggest festivals in Ireland this year, there's always next year. Find out early where you can apply for a job like that and fill in your application form or contact the right people. Remember that an opportunity like that doesn't come along every day and by grabbing it, you get to be a part of a bigger picture. Although you're at work while other people are out enjoying themselves, it doesn't feel like a typical day at work. You can still absorb the unforgettable atmosphere of the Galway Races and bump into celebrities. You get paid, spend time with new exciting friends, and get to serve champagne to Miss Ireland or the Taoiseach Really, what's there to think about?

Race Week Know the form at the before you bet Connemara Coast Hotel
BY MAGDALENA SZULC If you are looking for somewhere different to celebrate race week this year look no further than the four star Connemara Coast Hotel, spectacularly set on the shores of Galway Bay with views of the Burren and Aran Islands in the distance. Located only 10 minutes from Galway city, the hotel is an ideal haven for escaping the hectic race week traffic and throngs of people. With free car and helicopter parking facilities once you arrive all you have to do is simply relax and enjoy the big week. For top cuisine, head chef Ulrich Hoeche has created a very special Galway Races menu featuring exquisite dishes such as lobster thermidor and pan fried oak smoked salmon, and sirloin of beef. This special menu imaginatively combines the best from land and sea all served to the melodic tunes of resident pianist Mary Kelly, followed by live entertainment each evening in Sin Sceal Eile and Player's Lounge. Overnight guests can enjoy a complimentary prerace champagne reception with live jazz on the garden patio overlooking Galway Bay. The resident tipster will also be on hand with the word from the `horse's mouth' on selected days. Other facilities include a range of luxurious bedrooms and a collection of stylish new suites with balconies overlooking the bay, and the award winning the Coast Club Leisure Centre. It's easy to bet all your money away and lose most or all of it, but that's not the point. The key to having a good time at the races is to find a balance between wise betting and other ways to enjoy yourself during the event. Taking advice from random people at pubs who are either boasting or complaining about their bets over endless pints of beer is certainly not a good idea. As the entire horse racing system presents itself as rather complicated, betting shouldn't be a reckless and hasty exercise. Before you decide to bet your money on any horse, you should do your homework on value betting and get advice and tips from trustworthy sources. Find out about types of bets, different races, ways of choosing a horse, etc. Don't leave everything to chance, just because it's a gamble. Know what you're doing. Remember that favourites don't always win, although it does happen. There's more to betting than just going for the most popular horse and you should know what it is. Don't go for the horse that looks like it might just bring you fortune either; after all, it's your money and nobody's going to give it back to you if you lose. If you don't know anyone who could help you

get through the confusing system of bet placing and establishing the whole system, you can always look for websites with this information. These will provide you with the tips you need and gradually point you in the right direction. It will take you a while to refine that system and build your horse betting sense, but you're surely better off doing that than carelessly betting on random horses.
