A resident of a County Galway area for almost 50 years has warned that people will not buy houses in Brackernagh, Ballinasloe if paid car parking is introduced there. In an open letter to members of Ballinasloe Town Council Brackernagh resident Phyllis Judge says it is not acceptable that residents of the area will be asked to pay for parking outside "their front doors" when parking charges do not apply to other residential areas in the town. "I wish to strongly object to the proposed parking in Brackernagh. I am a resident there for nearly 50 years and I will not allow parking outside of my gate day or night. My late husband and I paid for tarmacadam, for a parking area (for two cars) inside my gate to allow my family to park their vehicles. The parking rights of my drive way is my responsibility and not the town council's." The widowed mother of eight says she paid taxes and rates all her life and bought her home when times were hard. "Now you [the Town Council] want to charge me and my family for parking at my home. I rely on solid fuel (turf, loose briquettes and timber) to be delivered on a regular basis. I demand free access to and from my home and garage for me and my family at all times." Mrs Judge says she suffers from arthritis, together with other medical problems which limit her mobility, and she is increasingly dependent on her family. "It is not acceptable to us the residents and families of Brackernagh that we be asked to pay for parking outside our own front doors when there are no parking charges in the other residential areas in Ballinasloe. Wouldn't the commercial areas in the town be the place where best

suited to introduce such charges?" She says the Brackernagh community has always facilitated the parking needs of the "huge numbers" of vehicles attending funerals leaving Portiuncula Hospital mortuary. "We welcome the short term parking of customers using the shops in our area which would be affected hugely no doubt if paid parking was introduced. If there is a need for extra parking in Portiuncula Hospital then why isn't there more parking provided on the hospital grounds? We the residents should not have to suffer because of this." She says when the super dump was created people were told that extra revenue was being taken by the council so the town would not need to introduce this form of revenue. "Now we are being told that the town council wants paid parking as a source of revenue. We have been left with the negative environmental effects of a super dump in our town, in addition to the dump being closed and now cannot facilitate any of our local waste. Where is all the revenue from the dump gone?" Mrs Judge describes Brackernagh as a "proud community" and warns paid parking will lead to families not buying homes there. "It will lead to mass rental of properties in our area, in essence driving out respected members of this community that have lived here all their lives, only to be replaced by people renting here and more than likely those who can't afford car parking. The council will have a lot more to worry about (other than parking charges) when this happens. Who will buy a house in Brackernagh in the future, knowing that parking fees will be an additional yearly expense?" She is appealing to the town council not to implement paid parking. She says there is no justification for this proposed levy which she is "unjust and unfair".
