Senator calls for mandatory registration of dangerous dogs
BY MARY O'CONNOR A local politician has called for the mandatory registration of owners of dangerous breeds of dogs such as pitbulls and rottweilers, in the wake of a savage attack by pitbulls on gardai during a drugs raid in the city last week. Senator Fidelma Healy Eames says registration should involve the assessment of the owner's ability to handle, care and take responsibility for the dog. The owner's character and purpose for owning such a dog should be examined as a part of the registration process, too, she believes. "There must be a criteria for ownership. Dangerous breeds of dogs in the wrong hands or unsupervised can do untold damage to humans. This is highly threatening and completely out of order. Dangerous breeds should be regularly vetted as well to assess their temperament. A veterinary surgeon would be best able to assess the temperament and safety of the dog as it matures. "The owner's intention in owning such a dog is the critical factor. Along with ownership must come responsibility. It is not the pitbull's fault that they attack. This is the nature of the dog and its breeding." Too many such accidents and savage attacks have occured, according to the Fine Gael senator. "It is time we debated the protection of our communities and citizens, especially those in the line of duty, from dangerous breeds of dog."

Finish Ballyloughane footpaths before there is a `serious accident' says O'Flaherty
BY KERNAN ANDREWS Footpaths in the Ballyloughane area must be completed soon before there is a "serious accident" on this busy and narrow stretch of road. This is the view of PD Cllr Terry O'Flaherty. Some time ago, she tabled a Notice of Motion before the Galway City Council to have footpaths installed in the Ballyloughane area, particularly along the route from the bridge to the beach. Works began with footpaths being laid down just inside the wall along this route, but then ceased. Cllr O'Flaherty is now calling on City Hall to complete this project "as a matter of urgency", taking into account "the increased number of pedestrians" who use the roadway. Cllr O'Flaherty said: "I walk this road on a regular basis and have witnessed the amount of speeding on this very narrow stretch. In the interest of public safety I feel that the completion of these footpaths should be prioritised in order to avoid a serious accident occurring there."
