Having a tiny piece of cannabis concealed in his sock while sitting in his car near the beach nearly cost an unemployed carpenter his licence at Galway District Court this week. Before the court was birthday boy Mark Phelan (23), 101 Castlepark, Ballybane, Galway, who pleaded guilty to having 30 worth of cannabis concealed in his right sock on February 24 last, when he was searched by Garda Gerry Dunne at Silver Strand, Salthill, Galway. Defence solicitor Sean O'Carroll said his client was a carpenter by trade but was currently unemployed and between jobs. He said Phelan was

celebrating his birthday on the date of his court appearance and added he had not used cannabis since his encounter with Garda Dunne. Judge Mary Fahy warned Phelan he could lose his driving licence for being found in possession of an illegal drug in his car. Mr O'Carroll asked the judge not to disqualify his client as he would need his licence to get another job. He told the judge his client had no previous convictions and had pleaded guilty straight away to the offence. Judge Fahy imposed a 250 and decided not to disqualify the accused in the circumstances
