Book of remembrance Relapse after years `on the dry' lands for Children's Remembrance Day Mass well-known street character in court
BY MARY O'CONNOR The Children's Remembrance Day Committee at University Hospital Galway is inviting parents and families who have experienced the death of a child before birth, shortly after birth, or at a later stage to include their loved one in a special Mass. A Book of Remembrance which contains the names of these children will be presented to the altar during the Mass. The readings and reflections are chosen especially with the congregation in mind. A spokesperson for the HSE west says any death especially that of a child is very distressing for a family. "Parents are robbed of the joys and expectations that go with parenthood, siblings also feel cheated of the chance to get to know their little brother or sister." The chairperson of the Children's Remembrance Day Committee Margaret Duignan says there is a need for a special day for parents and families to share their grief. "Support lets the bereaved person know that there are people there that they can call. I would encourage anybody that would like their loved one to be included in this special Mass to contact us." The names of loved ones to be inscribed into the Book of Remembrance must be given to Margaret or Susan by Friday April 11. For further information contact Margaret Duignan at (091) 523206 or Susan Massey at (091) 635302.

One of Galway's most familiar and sometimes most infamous of street characters featured at Galway District Court this week. Denis Connolly, who is now in the care of the Simon Community, had been a familiar drunken figure on the streets of

the city for many decades before finally confronting his demons and going "on the dry" four years ago with the help of his friends in Simon. However, a short relapse this February saw him being arrested for his own safety when he was found highly intoxicated by gardai, first on February 7 last at Eyre Square and again on February 20 last at Ladbrokes, Raven's Terrace, Galway. Inspector Pat McHugh told the court that Connolly had 50 previous convictions, most of them for being drunk and a danger to himself and others in public. Connolly, who was accompanied in court by Mr Myles Murphy of Galway Simon Community, had to sit down while defence solicitor, Valerie Corcoran, spoke on his behalf. She said her client was well known to the people of Galway prior to four years ago when he finally went "on the dry" with the help of

the Simon Community. She said the people there were very good to him and Mr Murphy was present in court to lend support. She said Connolly had been attending regular meetings and had managed to stay sober but he "fell off the wagon" in February for a short period. This relapse, Ms Corcoran said, had been short-lived and her client was now sober again and back attending regular AA meetings, with the full support of the Simon Community. Connolly told Judge Mary Fahy that he had made one slip in the four years but that he was back attending meetings again. Judge Fahy said he had taken the step with the help of the Simon Community to address his alcohol problem and he should continue to do so. She applied the Probation Act in relation to the first offence on February 7 and imposed a 100 fine in relation to the second offence.
